The GIS director uses technical as well as administrative skills to ensure that GIS technology is used properly and efficiently in the city. The GIS director must be aware of the spatial information needs of the city and the resources that are needed to meet them. This means that a working knowledge of the city’s functions and activities is important together with knowledge of the, technology, databases and software used in those functions and activities. The director must possess the skills and abilities necessary to ensure that a project is completed on time and within budget constraints. Successful directors set project goals and objectives, establish completion dates, obtain necessary resources, monitor and evaluate the work of subordinates and coordinate activities within the GIS division. As in most technical fields a GIS director must know more than project oversight and staff supervision, a technical background is necessary as implementation of projects is required. The GIS director will coordinate internal and external GIS activities between different groups, agencies, departments and individuals. The GIS director reports directly to the Planning Director but leeway is granted for independent judgment and initiative.
