I am a Faculty member in the Boston Children’s Hospital Computational Health Informatics Program. I work in the Computational Epidemiology Group (HealthMap). Through social media, forums and online communities, wearable technologies and mobile devices, there is a growing body of health-related data that can shape our assessment of human illness. Collectively, this data comprises an individual’s ‘digital phenotype’ - unique, unsolicited and real-time information about a person’s health. My research focuses on using digital phenotypes for population health surveillance, specifically to identify and analyze specific sub-populations over space and time with the goal of better understanding patient behavior and disease dynamics. Some current research topics include foodborne illness, insomnia, autism, febrile illness, and patient experience.

Responsible for building technological architecture to support new research efforts, translation of research projects into commercial products, and the development and enhancement of analytic tools and capabilities for both the hospital and commercial partners. Recent product launches include: 1) COVID vaccine availability for the US supported by CDC (VaccineFinder, Vaccines.gov), 2) a global data repository for COVID epidemiological data in partnership with Google (Global.health), and 3) COVID symptom tracking supported by CDC and Flu Lab (COVID Near You / Outbreaks Near Me).

In addition to my research roles at Boston Children's Hospital, I lead many digital health efforts in the Innovation Group. I work translationally bringing digital health projects from research into implementation and enterprise. Multiple research projects have the potential for commercialization, and I work closely with the rest of the Innovation Team to develop, refine, and implement these ideas.

I spend my time split between research and operations. On the research side, I work in the Computational Epidemiology Group (Informatics Program, Emergency Medicine Department) leveraging untapped datasets (e.g., social media data) to gain insight into individual and population health, and to use health data to provide decision support (e.g., at-home treatment recommendations). On the operations side, I work as an Informaticist in the Genetics Department (Research Connection) building tools to help clinicians integrate genomic information into clinical care.

Genetics Research Consultant for the Clinical Pharmacogenomics Service. I provide expertise on computational infrastructure design and clinical informatics research support to develop projects around pharmacogenomic computing. This expertise includes developing a pharmacogenomic strategy, creating genetic rules for use in both the clinical and research settings, and designing and maintaining an interactive webapp used for generating clinical reports detailing personalized pharmacogenomic dosing.

I developed tools for the clinical analysis of next-generation sequencing data such as COSMOS, a highly parallelizable workflow manager used to analyze NGS data in the cloud (AWS) with a fast turnaround and low cost. I served as team leader for this large, international project.
