"What do you want to be when you grow up?" This is a question you get asked constantly as child or teenager. My answer as a child was a pilot. I loved everything to do with aviation and would spend hours drawing, reading and watching anything that had to do with aeroplanes. My reports as a child would always say that I was good at daydreaming and that was true. As time went on, I realised that my dream might not become true (mainly due to me not achieving my full potential in school) and I knew that I had to look somewhere else. I began to love Art and Design in high school and I did well at it. This led me to believe that I should become a graphic designer after school. However, upon reflection, I knew I would probably end up doing boring signage for the rest of my life - and this was not good enough for me. I eventually gathered up the courage and told my parents that I would like a gap year to search for some answers. Personally, I think they were relieved. I joined an organisation which assisted and supported people throughout South Africa. 5 months into my gap year, I found myself in a rural area of South Africa, singing and playing games with the local children - completely out of my comfort zone.You may ask yourself why I am telling you this - It was in that moment that my life changed forever. I went from disliking children and grew to become a person that loves working with them. People would say to me that I would be a good teacher and I would laugh at them. However, over time I began to realise that teaching is my calling. Since becoming a full time teacher, I love every minute of it. The marking and some things make the job tiresome at times but I always look forward to everyday. Every day is different and it is a chance for me to teach a child something new or for them to teach me, we laugh together or overcome challenges together. I want to be a positive influence in all my learners and their families’ lives.
