Jared Holshouser, Ph. D. Email and Phone Number
I've worked in academia as a mathematician for 13 years as a teacher, scholar, mentor, and a supervisor. I've taught probability and statistics and I've trained myself on data analysis. I want to connect with other data analysts so that I can apply my skills beyond the walls of academia.Over the last year I've learned how to apply my statistical background in many settings: R, SAS, SQL, Python, and Power BI. In addition to gaining fluency in these programs, I've learned about preparing, cleaning, summarizing, and presenting data and I've learned techniques for exploratory data analysis. To enhance my background knowledge, I've studied relational database theory and data normalization. I've applied these skills to build reports on the finances of Norwich University and reports on changes in the medical spending of elderly people in US.With the benefit of these tools, I realize that I've been working as a data analyst the entire time I've been in academia. When I created rubrics for projects, figured out how to assign credit for group work, or broke a course into discrete objectives for mastery grading, I was building data models. My goal in teaching was always to figure out how to best help students and structure courses. I would not have been successful as an educator if I hadn't created quality data to draw conclusions from.I also learned that some of the other responsibilities of a data analyst are writing reports and creating dashboards, something I am no stranger to. Although I didn't realize it, I'd been creating data driven reports and even dashboards for years. For instance, when I taught financial math I created an interactive templated excel spreadsheet to help students plan for their financial future. Now that I have the right tools and I know the language of data analysis, I am actively seeking a job in data analytics and would love to network with other people in the profession.
