Civil Engineer - Dam Breach Analyst

As a civil engineering student, I was tasked with creating a breach analysis report of two dams located in Thompson, CT. My primary responsibilities included non-official visual inspections of the Langer’s Pond Dam (Class BB) and the North Grosvenordale Dam (Class C). I recorded noticeable damages to the dam structures and/or surrounding land, as well as identified vulnerable downstream structures. I interfaced with the CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection to obtain previous breach analysis reports and identified the watershed, storage areas, and geometries relevant to each dam. I used HEC-RAS software to model a breach analysis for a 100-year rainstorm event. This included a recorded video simulation showing maximum elevations, duration of initial wave to pass area of focus, and breaching times of each dam. We constructed an inundation map with ArcGIS, representing the downstream flood area of the breached dams. A final report summarized all data, breach analysis, and detailed inundation map.
