About Jared Ely
I am currently a high school Chemistry Teacher at Parkland High School in Allentown, PA. I strive to introduce my students to STEAM concepts, relating those concepts to their lives and individual interests. I am passionate about giving students choice in the classroom and implementing the tenets of the NGSS into my lessons.Prior to my current career in education, I received my Bachelor of Science at Drexel University in Materials Science and Engineering with a concentration in Polymer Science and a Minor in Chemistry. During this time, I focused my studies mainly on polymeric materials and the different modes of processing both thermoplastics and thermosets. Additionally, I performed two of my Co-Operative experiences through Drexel in the healthcare industry (specifically in pharmaceuticals and biomedical devices) and found both experiences very interesting and enjoyable.Post-undergraduate studies, I was employed at The Secant Group, LLC working as a research chemist on bioresorbable resins. During this time, my activities consisted mainly of diverse R&D work to identify potential surgical/medical uses of Poly (glycerol sebacate) (PGS), scale-up of PGS synthesis, and various analytical work to characterize different resins. To a lesser extent, I was involved in analysis of medical textiles through various techniques (mechanical, thermal, and spectroscopic testing; SEM and optical microscopy) and early conceptualization of a piezoelectric device.In order to transition into the field of education, I completed my Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree at Lehigh University. While completing this degree, I spent one year employed at the Centennial School and taught students with Emotional Disturbance and/or Autism a variety of different subjects; in this position, I also delivered the services in each of my students' IEPs and case-managed three students, all while implementing the Centennial School's PBIS system and different structures designed to help all of the students succeed. Following this, I completed a pre-professional placement at Saucon Valley Middle School and a student teaching experience at Parkland High School, both under mentor teachers with years of experience in teaching different sciences.
