I'm currently the VP of Research and Innovation at VidAngel, working to push the boundaries of what's possible with dynamic streaming media delivery. Our product uses customized filters to allow families and individuals to watch television and movies from various streaming services without certain audio or video scenes present (i.e. swearing, violence, etc). In my history of work at VidAngel, I have been on the forefront of our product, inventing (and patenting) the core technologies, leading the engineering team as VP of Engineering, and now developing new research and creative ideas (AI, Machine Learning, networked service architecture, etc) to continue to grow the product. I also serve on VidAngel's executive leadership team and board. I am comfortable switching contexts between leadership and engineering as needed to get things done; I know the power of strong leadership and mentorship but also firmly believe that the best leaders must have intricate, applied knowledge in the things they're trying to shepherd others in doing.Before VidAngel, I worked for 10 years as a professor of Digital Humanities, and directed the office of digital humanities at Brigham Young University. Most of my research and teaching centered around media analysis and delivery, using film and TV for language and cultural learning, computational approaches to media studies (including signal processing and machine learning), and technology pedagogy. I worked on international research teams with colleagues from U.S., Canadian, and European universities and published many articles in digital humanities academic journals.
