In my role as an Electrical Engineer at Aurecon I was part of the Resources and Manufacturing team where I also worked closely with the Buildings, Water and Advisory teams. During my four years in this position I gained design experience with HV, LV, instrumentation and control systems projects across a range of industries including Resources, Manufacturing, Water and Defence. Some of my responsibilities included: maximum demand calculations, LV power system modelling, cable sizing/route determination, lighting design, HV cable trench design, HV load flow study, HV fault study, lightning risk assessment/design and earthing design. I was also responsible for the technical selection and procurement of various pieces of electrical equipment, prepared cost estimates and developed bids in response to requests for tender. During 2018/19 I was seconded to the Aurecon Gladstone office for one year where I gained experience on sites such as RG Tanna Coal Terminal and QAL Refinery. I completed a Hazardous Area Classification and Design competency course and a three day training course on Power Tools for windows software. I also gained experience using the following software packages: Power Tool for Windows (PTW32), PowerCad, AGi32 Lighting Design and CDEGS Earthing Design.

While undertaking my degree, I also worked part time as a student ambassador at the University of Southern Queensland. My role as a student ambassador involved promoting tertiary study to school aged students. As a result, I was often required to speak to large groups of students and also have individual conversations with students about tertiary education. The position as an ambassador provided me with an excellent opportunity to greatly improve my public speaking skills along my ability to interact and effectively communicate with other people. Furthermore, as an ambassador I gained a great deal of experience working in a team environment at large events held at the university.

Over the summer holidays for 2014/15 and 2015/16 I was privileged enough to complete a total of six months’ vacation work with Ergon Energy. During my time at Ergon Energy I worked primarily within the Network Planning team on a number of different projects. Two of the major projects I worked on include the Distribution Network Capability Report (DNCR) and a Demographic Study for the Bundaberg Region. This vacation work as an electrical engineering student provided me with a wealth of knowledge as to what it is like being a professional engineer. I gained many essential skills over this six month period including; time management, teamwork and even employability skills. These skills cannot simply be learned in the same fashion in a classroom situation.

During my time at Master Hire my job primarily involved serving customers and basic maintenance tasks. I learned how to competently operate different machinery such as excavators, dingo's and skid steer loaders. Along with operating this machinery I also had to perform pre-hire checks on all equipment which involved cleaning the equipment and undertaking maintenance tasks. Serving customers and counting the days takings were also tasks that I took part of.
