About Jacob Harrison

Hello! My name is Dr. Jacob Harrison. I am a postdoctoral researcher in the Bhamla Lab at the Georgia Institute of Technology. I study the comparative biomechanics of ultrafast movement in biological systems, such as the rapid jump of a grasshopper or a powerful punching mantis shrimp. Ultrafast movement in biology is possible through carefully coordinating springs, muscles, and latches. I study how various biological organisms develop spring-driven motion and how they use them. Then I use that information to better understand why these mechanisms have evolved so often in nature.I am also very passionate about education and community outreach. I have developed and run several community programs for science education. Most recently is the in-situ Jungle Biomechanics Lab! In this program, we bring early career scientists to the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest and teach them how to do integrative biomechanics research in the field. We then help them share that knowledge with local communities in Peru!
