My PhD was on Grammatical Inference, which is a sub-field of machine learning that involves learning models (known as formal language representations) from samples of strings taken from some unknown formal language. My theoretical work was on building and analysing learning algorithms for probabilistic context- free grammars (PCFGs). I also studied properties of PCFGs themselves. From the practical side, I applied my algorithms in natural language processing. Basically, I took large amounts of unstructured data as input (e.g. thousands of natural language sentences) and used my algorithms for two tasks: (1) Assigning structure to data (through parse trees) and (2) Finding stochastic distributions describing the data, which can be used for sentence validation and completion.
