My career as a code consultant has been committed to specializing in smoke control system design and commissioning, general building and fire code challenges from the smallest residential communities to the tallest high rises west of the Mississippi, risk assessments of warehousing and manufacturing operations, and evaluations of the production and storage of hazardous materials. My clients can expect a level of detail in my presenting and reporting that will be useful for identifying problems, preserving creativity in design, and developing reasonable, cost-effective solutions.Fire Protection Engineers are often utilized by established architects, owners, and developers, in the planning and development of infrastructure and large projects such as airports, hospitals, hotels, and high-rises. As any of us will tell you, we like being part of the team as early as possible where our experience interpreting code, connecting disciplines on constructability issues, and anticipating potential delays will have the greatest impact on scheduling and cost. In sharp contrast, many times I've been consulted to address citations or violations that arise long after a business has been in operation. Part of my responsibility as a consultant is to commit time to educating owners on risk, and communicating with the authorities to better understand what, in their experience, can be done to increase safety and decrease exposure to losses of life and property. It is important to me that clients commit some of their own time to understanding the reasoning behind regulations that affect their businesses, and it is my commitment to continue to bring meaningful value in return.
