ShellPath - bacterial and viral behaviour in relation to shellfish. EFF funded with industrial partnership (Bangor Mussel Producers & Dwr Cymru)Lead researcher on the ShellPath project to investigate the relationship between human pathogenic microorganisms and shellfish areas. My work has included recovery and quantification of bacteria and viruses from a range of matrices in the marine and estuarine environment to establish spatial and temporal patterns of bacterial and viral contamination and the production of reports and ecology assessments to promote sustainable growth in the sector. The Shellpath project has informed & steered the debate on legislation to quantify microbial pathogen risk, particularly for norovirus, within the EU. Business liaison and research for seacams, Sustainable Expansion of the Coastal and Marine Sectors, a WEFO funded initiative to encourage business development in the marine environment within the Convergence area of Wales.Working with a large team of marine researchers to develop links with industry and the university to initiate and develop collaborative research projects or assist businesses to expand in the sector through scientific and technical assistance. This role involved the planning and conducting filed surveys, stakeholder recommendations for environmental mitigation or sustainability requirements, preparation of reports, research tenders and liaising with industrial and regulatory stakeholders.Key skills: Research/industry liaison, report writing, time management, risk management/assessment, presentation.

Maintain discipline and pastoral care of 2400 student residents on the university’s largest residential site. I lead a team of 30 student wardens, plus 5 senior wardens. Duties include recruitment & training of team, people management, organising team meetings, rotas, mandatory fire safety talks and fire drills, liaison with the halls office, student union and security services. I am also a disciplinary officer of the university in this role, and audit the work of others in the department.Key skills: People & time management, pastoral care, objective & critical thinking, communication, auditing.

The role of bursicon in the neurohormonal cascade controlling ecdysis in decapod crustaceans.Working within the crustacean biology group at the School of Biological Sciences, this purpose of the research project is to investigate release of the hormone bursicon during the moult cycle of the green crab Carcinus maenas and the European lobster Homarus gammarus. Bursicon is the ultimate hormone in the hormonal cascade that triggers the stages of ecdysis in arthropods. This role requires a high level of critical thinking, working independently, but within a small research group.
