Worked with the Urban Resources Initiative at Yale University to promote community forestry practices in underresourced areas in New Haven, CT. Collaborated with and engaged local community members to create parks, ecological preserves, and other urban oases in Newhallville, Dixwell, and Fair Haven, all Environmental Justice (EJ) communities. Assisted and educated community leaders in environmental stewardship and ecological assessment practices while providing them with plants, tools, and other resources such that they and their communities can continue to steward the greenspaces we created together. Projects included the conversion of vacant lots and dumping grounds into parks, planting street trees to enhance climate resilience and reduce the urban heat island effect, and stewarding Urban Oases, pockets of the city with high biodiversity. Served as the Urban Oasis Coordinator to track and efficiently use over $14,000 in grant funding for parks that promote biodiversity conservation. Tracked grant spending for all projects, brainstorm with other interns on the best ways for them to use their funding, and ensure that all funding is being used efficiently and effectively.

Performed independent research on ant-plant mutualism and community ecology in aseasonal old-growth forest systems in the Ecuadorian Amazon through the Comita-Queenborough Lab at Yale University. Identified and measured Amazonian plants and conducted significant statistical analysis. Did spring and summer fieldwork in a remote study area within Yasuní National Park, the most biodiverse area on the planet.

I wrote, designed, and conducted multiple weekly tours of the collections of the Yale Peabody Museum. Effectively communicated complex scientific topics to a wide variety of audiences. Digitized, identified, and sorted the entomological collections at Yale’s Peabody Museum. Ensured that each specimen was properly labeled and entered into the Peabody EMu database, organized specimens in a way that was consistent with current phylogenies, and completed requests from researchers at other institutions.

I interned with Yale School of the Environment doctoral candidate Rachel Renne to help conduct field research for use in her thesis. We investigated the effects of variation in soil content, precipitation, and human activity on big sagebrush ecosystems. I gained experience with experimental design, field sampling methods, ArcGIS, and assessment protocols in the field of land management, especially the Bureau of Land Management’s AIM protocol. We also produced a large set of drone images to be used in remote sensing analyses of sagebrush ecosystems. I was selected as a Yale Summer Environmental Fellow in support of this work.

I completed over 1,000 hours of conservation service work throughout New Mexico and Arizona. I learned about many aspects of land management, worked to identify and remove or protect many species of rare or invasive plants, maintained and constructed trails in five different national forests, and worked closely with associates from the Forest Service and National Park Service.

I worked directly with both the candidate and the campaign finance director to raise and manage funds for Andru Volinsky’s gubernatorial campaign. Additionally, I wrote and edited several pages on volinskynh.com. Our campaign focused on small-dollar donations rather than corporate contributions and broke the New Hampshire state record for the highest number of individual donors to a campaign. Key issues included public education funding, renewable energy policy, and criminal justice reform.
