This challenging position reported to the Senior Vice President of Underwriting and was accountable for all day to day operations as well as several strategic change initiatives. Markel Insurance is a specialty insurance carrier in the transportation field, providing the leadership in this line of insurance, hence contributing significantly toward Canadian economy for over fifty years.  Led the Underwriting department initiatives in providing significant leadership in Markel’s change management process towards developing and adopting new technology, new strategies and work processes to increase efficiencies and profitability. This included changing the culture within the department, through staff involvement and their buy in. Directed with a hands on style the day-to-day operations of the ‘Owner Operator and Small Fleet’ Underwriting Department, consisting of six underwriting supervisors and as many as sixty staff. Planned, implemented and was fiscally responsible for the annual department budget.  Directed planning, recruitment and training of people resources and oversaw their workload and deliverables. Active in the annual performance reviews at all levels.  Ensured national standards were met in each of the following categories: risk selection, data quality, price adequacy and service standards. Achieved regional production and profitability goals; while securing compliance with the regulatory requirements. Collaborated with the Broker Relations Department in ongoing development of distribution channel, securing broker training and executing regional production plans. Consistently evaluated through 360 degree surveys and performance reviews as having provided effective daily leadership, coaching, motivation and managements skills  Was an integral member of self directed Project Management Team with my primary responsibility for long term strategic planning, in particular with focus on leveraging newly built technology.

As a result of promotions within the company, held three different positions during this period, steadily progressing toward more responsible roles. In the latest two, reported to the Vice President of Commercial Underwriting. Kingsway General Insurance was a multiline insurance company that established itself during this period as one of the main competitors in providing insurance coverage to the transportation industry. Under my initiative and leadership, the Audit and Compliance Department for all commercial lines was created for the first time. Set up and managed, in a head office capacity, the Audit and Compliance Department for all commercial lines – Automobile, Transportation and Property. Developed and implemented auditing processes and oversaw the compliance with SOX, regulators and Government bodies for applicable lines of business. Assisted in the development, recording and management of Commercial Automobile, Long Haul Trucking and Commercial Property matrices and data analysis reports Developed and implemented initiatives for improvement of product, customer service and workflows for commercial lines. Managed underwriting and processing, including pricing, rating strategy, use of capacity and reinsurance for transportation business in all Provinces, except Quebec. Participated in both the strategic and financial planning activities of the company and ensured implementation to meet the annual budget. Trained, mentored and coached supervisors, team leaders and underwriters. Reviewed existing policy documents identifying and implementing changes to policy wordings and processes where needed, based on industry standards and regulatory requirements. Maintained personnel records, monitored employee development and conducted annual performance evaluation for a team of fifteen employees.  Authored the first Underwriting Guideline for Long Haul Transportation operations. Handled brokers’ service issues.

Reporting to the National Team Leader for Commercial Automobile, in this head office role I oversaw the national performance of the commercial automobile book of business, compliance with regulatory bodies, conducted quality control and acted as a technical resource for underwriters.  Operated as a resource for underwriters, on a national level, and conducted regional audits Reviewed the profitability of the automobile book of business and participated in corporate projects intended to improve profitability and business practices.  Maintained liaison contacts with the Regulators in all Canadian Provinces, ensuring compliance with their requirements and kept the Underwriting Guidelines and Manuals in line with regulatory requirements and the changes in the Industry.

Expanded the underwriting knowledge by specializing in long haul trucking insurance. Markel Insurance is a leading specialty insurance carrier in the transportation field, providing customized package policies for long haul transportation companies.  Underwrote package policies consisting of Auto, Cargo and CGL coverage for long-haul trucking businesses operating in USA and across Canada. Was responsible for both trucking fleets, and individual rated trucking accounts. Directed and coordinated activities of Fleet Safety Inspectors, arranged Facultative Reinsurance where required, oversaw issuance of bound policies and required statutory filings.  Developed and maintained positive brokers’ relations with specialized brokers’ segment

Developed the underwriting skills by assessing and writing insurance policies for commercial automobile risks and participated in training of less experienced staff members. Underwrote and serviced fleets and individually rated commercial auto accounts operating locally.  Insured Garage exposures and Private Passenger and Recreational Vehicles when part of a fleet.  Handled Broker’s Portfolio Transfers and developed and maintained positive brokers’ relations..  Involved in training of underwriting assistants and monitored their progress.
