The new parent company reorganized to integrate its holdings. My assignment – lead the operations and integration between my subsidiary and another company the parent had acquired. Bringing these two companies together invigorated me because of the challenges. The companies had operations across the United States and Mexico, with different cultures that needed to mesh. As the Business Lead, I managed a smooth integration of the mutual Supply Chain optimization and migration using a common ERP. The ERP also had to support users in Singapore and provided additional considerations for making the key business processes efficient and effective.

In this role, I pivoted from a corporate operations position to full P&L responsibility managing what the company’s first site was. I managed the $25MM location from sales to shipment with complete P&L responsibility. The operations profile was the most complex, including the main packaging commodities, a box sheet plant, and a woodshop and crating unit. My deep knowledge of the company’s operations, engineering, and information systems provided me with a well-rounded skill group to effectively bring the groups together and enable sales. During this time, I aided due diligence and served on the integration team of another acquisition.

This exciting Operations Center of Excellence role led me to relocate to the corporate office in Texas just as key owner-stakeholders were changing in the organization. It was a new position as the responsibilities were distributed previously, in the Finance department and otherwise. It brought together project-oriented team members spanning Manufacturing, Quality, Safety, Analytics, and IT. This combination was much fun and allowed me to help the organization move forward with a common vision. Together, this group set up international manufacturing operations and deployed Operational & Financials KPIs that aligned the entire organization’s definition of success. It was a good blend of operations leadership and FP&A activity.

In this role, I lead a team of internal and contracted software developers. With our new ERP just settling in, we had a lot of reporting and integration activities to support. EDI was a large focus for integrating with our key trading partners and adding value by having the business silos work together. Our key sales estimating tool was external to the ERP, so we designed interfaces that aligned Shop Rates, Cycle Times, and material costs to cost accounting information.

The goals I helped the organization achieve led me into a role where I started interacting more throughout the enterprise. In this Information Systems role, my first official IT-oriented position, I was able to turn my affinity for software development into my day job. I did much work in Business Intelligence solutions, data warehousing and migrated all of our reports to integrate with the new ERP system. It was a great way to learn the business from the inside out by serving as a business analyst and report writer. Applying my process engineering skills, I was able to impact how departments were working together in the various business processes.

I worked on a team of design engineers who served the sales organization and the manufacturing team. It was a very educational opportunity to be hands-on in the entire sales to shipment cycle. My robotics background came in handy, and I worked with the facilities team to create a simple yet highly efficient assembly fixture that eliminated non-conformities and increased efficiency. I developed labor recording software peripheral to our ERP to track real-time labor performance and sales estimate accuracy. After ten years and a few iterations later, that labor tool was being used across the company sites, even internationally. There was also an opportunity to improve the sales pipeline tracking and engineering workload management. I partnered with both the engineering and sales teams to use a common tool that helped us measure conversion ratio, speed-to-market metrics, and other key data points.
