Working with young kids through various discipline situations and the realm of athletics is an incredibly fulfilling experience as well as challenging at times. As the Dean of Students I have the opportunity to help students reflect on choices and behaviors to learn and grow. I assist teachers in maintaining a positive learning environment in their classroom and contribut to the general culture of the school as a safe and encouraging place for our students to learn.I love sports and I love the opportunity to guide our athletic department toward contributing a fun, healthy, and character building aspect of our students development. I have the privilege of working with all of our coaches to anticipate and reflect on how they can best lead our young kids in their athletic endeavors while maintaining a focus on sportsmanship and teamwork. As the director of an alternative school, athletic coach, and lead teacher of a boarding school I have been able to work closely with concerned parents, special education teams, and school administrators. Collaboration has been my key to success along with building rapport with my students and athletes. I use humor, mainly dry wit, compassion, life experiences, student interests, and my strange penchant for riding a bicycle to work every day(apparently only crazy people do this!) to form bonds with my students. I share my life interests with my students as evidence for a fulfilling life. They see my unique eternal optimism and begin to ask questions. Seeking knowledge is a fundamental step to becoming a successful member in our modern society. I don't have all the answers, but my students see me as unique and confident and that intrigue builds interest eventually leading to trust. When not in the school building, you can find me running with my wife and boys, training for marathons, mountain biking, camping, studying personal finance, coaching my boys' sports teams, at church, or playing board games with my family.
