About Jason Gerstner
I am currently working in the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine at Washington State University- Spokane. Previously I discovered and characterized the unique time-of-day cycling of the brain-type fatty-acid binding protein (Fabp7) in mammalian brain (Gerstner et al., 2006; Gerstner et al., 2008). What made these findings novel was that prior to these observations, it was not known whether oscillations in specific transcripts of cycling genes occur in phase brain-wide, since canonical 'clock' genes cycle out of phase in extra-SCN areas. Given the importance of cycling molecules in memory formation (Gerstner and Yin, 2010), I then cloned and characterized the Fabp7 homologue dFabp in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, and made transgenic flies that over-express the murine Fabp7 or dFabp, in order to test whether changes in Fabp levels confer sleep and memory phenotypes (Gerstner et al., 2011a; Gerstner et al., 2011b). I then explored the subcellular localization of Fabp7 in the mouse model, where relative levels of Fabp7 mRNA concentration oscillate in the perisynaptic process compartment over the light-dark cycle in astrocytes (Gerstner et al., 2012). We have now established that the astrocyte Fabp7 gene is necessary for normal sleep in flies, mice, and humans (Gerstner et al., 2017). Current studies are identifying astrocyte pathways involved in regulating sleep, and the relationship between these events and neurodegenerative disease etiology, such as ALS, Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's diseases.Specialtiessleep and circadian rhythms, cellular and molecular biology, genetics, synaptic plasticity, neurobiology of learning and memory, neurometabolic coupling, glia
