About Jason R. Spence

My laboratory focuses on stem cell and developmental biology. One of the major goals of this work is to use the information gained from basic developmental biology to direct the differentiation of pluripotent stem cells into specific tissue lineages. We have developed a novel system that utilizes human embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cells to generate mature intestinal tissue in culture, called human intestinal organoids (HIOs). We use HIOs in addition to mouse organoids (enteroids) to study intestinal homeostasis and stem cell regulation. Our long-term goal is to use both mouse development and human stem cells in order to gain an in-depth appreciation for the complexity of normal embryonic development, and to begin to translate our findings so that we can generate human models to study disease processes, screen drugs, understand gene function and generate therapeutically useful tissue for transplantation.
