Project Engineer; Nuclear Development, June 2017 – CurrentLead engineer for multiple projects related to the transition of the Vogtle 3&4 organization from a Westinghouse-led to a Southern Nuclear-led organization. Assumed increasing roles for Nuclear Development regarding design development and regulatory enabling of advanced light water and non-light water reactors. Such roles include contributing to numerous industry groups such as the Nuclear Energy Institute Advanced Reactor Regulatory Task Force and assuming project lead responsibility for preparation of the Southern-lead Licensing Modernization Project guidance document for industry approval and Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) endorsement.

Supervised twelve full-time and contractor direct reports responsible for ensuring that the Vogtle 3&4 nuclear power plants are constructed in accordance with the NRC License for the project. Responsibilities included oversight, improvement, and implementation of processes for identifying and creating changes to project licensing basis documents. Accountable for negotiations with the NRC regarding proposed changes, resource allocation, and schedules of reviews.

Led the resolution of civil construction and design issues for the Vogtle 3 & 4 nuclear plant project. Actively contributed to industry efforts to support the design, licensing, and deployment of the Westinghouse AP1000 nuclear power plant design. Reviewed design and licensing documents and participated in industry groups with the intent of incorporating industry operating experience into the plant design while representing the long-term interests of the utility owners. Directly supervised department co-op students and interns.

Managed multiple long-term engineering projects for the Vogtle Electric Generating Plant. Directed the resolution of technical, financial, and administrative issues to support the development and implementation of Design Change Packages. Interfaced closely with vendors to promote product quality and timeliness and confirm compliance with vendor agreements. Participated in industry peer groups to improve plant performance and resolve common industry issues.

Designed and supported the installation of plant modifications such as structural components, piping supports, and instrument supports. Worked in a multi-disciplinary team to determine design requirements, designed structures and components to meet applicable codes and regulations, and provided technical assistance to field teams during construction. Additional duties included responding to emergent general civil engineering issues in support of the operation and maintenance of the plants. Responded to plants’ issues with coatings failure analysis, coating selection, and coatings applications as well as monitored and responded to industry issues and trends through participation in industry organizations.

Design Modifications, E-FIN GroupDesigned and led implementation of minor changes to plant structures and components. Completion of modifications required extensive field involvement and prompt resolution of emergent installation issues. Prepared responses to requests for engineering review for civil and mechanical issues. Tasks included investigation of issues to be resolved, review of plant design and licensing bases, design of plant modification or analysis of structures/components, and preparation of applicability determinations/10CFR50.59 evaluations for the proposed activities. Significant projects include modifications of ASME Section III NF structural supports, repair of ASME Section VIII pressure vessel, and modification of reactor head stand steel pedestals and reinforced concrete shield wall. Engineer I; Engineering Support, Programs GroupResponsible for implementation, maintenance and improvement of 10CFR50 Appendix J Containment Leakage (Local Leak Rate Testing/Integrated Leak Rate Testing) Program, ASME Section XI, Subsections IWE/IWL Containment Inservice Inspection Program, and Settlement Monitoring Program. Sought continuous improvement for each program by participating in industry initiatives and training, following industry-wide technical and licensing developments, and conducting off-site benchmarking of program practices and performance with SNC fleet and industry peers. Completed EPRI training course on nuclear coatings specification development, procurement, application, maintenance and failure analysis. Obtained ASME VT-2 visual examination certification to perform quality control leakage examinations of piping and vessels. Managed an 8-person team to execute an Integrated Leak Rate Test (ILRT) of the Unit 1 Containment structure. Additional noteworthy projects include management of a general visual examination and evaluation of the Unit 1 Containment liner, and construction of significant storm water drainage / retention projects.
