About Jason Mccasland

I was born on a small tropical island. The kind of place that people went to escape mainland life. I lived there until I was ten years old. Then my mother moved back to her hometown. On the outskirts of a rough inner city, I started middle school. A move well over 1000 miles that felt worlds apart. Sandals and short sleeves were quickly replaced by sneakers and winter coats. The change was drastic, and adaptation was required.I joined the Navy right out of High School as an Intelligence Analyst. I worked in an environment of constant ambiguity of information with a requirement for precise execution. I thrived under that pressure but eventually decided to leave service after nine years. I changed my clothes but kept the job and worked as a civilian contractor for three more years. Those twelve years gave me the capability to lead teams, make calls, and cultivate innovative solutions.Life threw a detour or two my way in the form of family illnesses. I left Intelligence to become a caretaker to a parent, the first time I’d been in such a role—another change. I found time to invest in unrealized interests with different demands for me, and I also became a farmer—more transformation. For years I had shelved my emotions. This experience forced me to explore my empathy. I took the chance to build those skills that I had yet to focus on actively. Eventually, the caretaking role came to an end, and it was time to rebuild. I went back to school and earned a Bachelors’s and Masters’s.Life has allowed me to perform many roles in my life. I’m grateful for the breadth of my experiences as they have molded me into the person I am now. A person that finds comfort in successfully executing when not everything is known. A dedicated professional that has made decisions with literal lives on the line. A caretaker who coaches others through the challenging moments of life.► Gallup Strengths: Strategic | Restorative | Ideation | Command | Analytical► Myers-Briggs: Extraversion | Intuition | Thinking | Perceiving► Core Qualifications: Analysis | Risk Management | Training & Development

  • Green Horizons
    Operations Manager
    Green Horizons Apr 2013 - Jul 2014
Green Horizons was a small-scale co-op farm focused on meeting the needs of its members. Excess produce is then sold within the local area to farmers' markets. I was recruited by the Owner to reduce the downtime within their production cycle, which was an ongoing issue. I was responsible for scheduling, production, budget, and maintenance.During my tenure in this role I successfully:► Assessed the financial needs of the company and implemented budget while regularly monitoring actual expenses with forecasted expenses.► Monitored all daily operations to ensure adherence to strict state regulations resulting in zero deficiencies during compliance reviews.► Ensured continuous production cycle through crop management and consistent scheduling, reducing downtime and increasing production by 20% per year.► Responded to members' demands to produce varieties and seasonal trends.► Prepared reports of projected yields to colleagues in distribution and sales regarding future availability for members and surpluses earmarked for secondary sales.► Established and implemented standard operating procedures for equipment and improved practices to provide a consistent environment for plant growth and increase yield.Due to increasing energy costs and production overhead and the farm’s limited footprint, the decision was made in May 2014 to end all future production at Green Horizons, officially closing in July 2014. This closure was the catalyst for my return to college full-time, completing my Bachelor's and Master's degrees.
