    The Quantum Machines Unit seeks to develop hybrid quantum devices – where different types of quantum technologies are married together to build devices with unique functionality e.g. quantum sensors, quantum interfaces, probing the fundamentals of quantum mechanics, novel quantum computing architectures etc. The Unit is focused on developing experimental quantum technology based on the preparation of quantum states of motion using magnetic levitation of small objects in vacuum. Such levitated nanoparticles may prove useful for the investigation of macroscopic Schrodinger Cats – which are useful for precision sensing and probing the fundamental links between gravity and quantum mechanics.This Unit is headed by Prof Jason Twamley and will begin operation in OIST from mid-2020. The Unit will operate with close communications between the theory and experimental sub-teams and Postdoctoral Researchers will be given the opportunity to assist in the education and training of PhD students, Rotation students and Intern students.

    Leader of the newly established Quantum Machines Unit. We will focused on developing quantum machines - useful devices - quantum sensors, interfaces, simulators and computers - that bring together disparate quantum technologies - and marrying them together to build a quantum machine. The QM Unit will focus on both theory and experiment where the latter studies the new paradigm of magneto-mechanical levitation of objects to develop quantum motional states of matter - eg. macroscopic quantum superpositions: Schrodinger Cats, for use as exquisite sensors and to study the interplay between quantum and gravity. We will be soon advertising exciting Postdoctoral and PhD opportunities.
