I have spent 9 years working with the Prison Legal Services of Michigan. I provided administrative support to the staff attorneys by collaborating on possible legal theories of any given case. I would do research using Westlaw and LexisNexis for many cases simultaneously giving priority to cases that had close deadlines. I used Microsoft word to draft correspondences to clients as well as memorandums of law, post-conviction motions, and applications for leave to appeal in the court of appeals and Supreme Court. I made sure that cases were properly calendared, when they were set for a hearing on a motion, with the attorneys.I would screen phone calls from inmates and forward any questions they had regarding their appeals to the attorneys. I would enter the names of the inmates and the attorneys assigned to their cases, along with pertinent case information, into an excel spreadsheet so we can avoid any potential conflicts of interest.Since 2015, I have been a paralegal and accountant for The Legal Services of Louis Fur. I performed freelance work for attorneys around the state of Michigan and other states such as Florida, California, and North Carolina. Depending on the type of case, I would do research using Westlaw and LexisNexis. I have e-filed cases using in the court of appeals using MIFILE. I proofread pleadings checking for grammatical errors. Also, since I have a degree in accounting I was also able to handle Louis’ account receivables and payables as well as record his expenses.
