Founded by Alfred and E. William Bierkle in 1971 as Diversified Data & Communications, our company spent most of its 50-year history providing paper billing services before expanding into electronic payments.In 2014, we became aware of a significant problem in our community — and beyond it: More than 20% of our fellow citizens are offline, unbanked, or underbanked. They are, effectively, excluded from accessing the online banking and bill paying services the rest of us rely on.This exclusion is problematic for the individuals who often go to greater lengths and incur higher costs than the rest of us to keep their lights on or their water running. And for the companies dealing with depressed collection rates.Just as importantly, this exclusion is simply wrong. And because my company and I could help correct this situation, could 𝘥𝘰 something rather than just 𝘴𝘢𝘺 something, that is exactly what we did.In 2014 we launched the DivDat Kiosk Network, an innovative, easy-to-use, no-fee payment model for energy, water, tax, and other bills. We used our experience and technological know-how to create a solution that improves the level of service afforded our fellow Americans, to increase their inclusion in this critical aspect of our financial lives.As President and CEO, I spend time on the nuts and bolts of running our company. But I devote most of my energy to assessing our environment, envisioning our most worthwhile role within it, and establishing the strategies and tactics that translate that vision into action. I also dedicate significant time to educating others about the exclusion of so many from such vital financial services.We are all entitled to move through the world on equal footing. We all face an imperative to do what we can to ensure that entitlement. We 𝘤𝘢𝘯 solve the problems of the offline, unbanked, and underbanked — so we 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥.
