Difficulties in regulating painful emotions are central to the behavioral difficulties of many adolescents (see Characteristics of Unskilled vs Skilled below). From these individuals’ perspective, painful feelings are most often the “problems to be solved.” These behavioral difficulties might be considered ADHD, anxiety, or depression as many of the symptoms and behaviors overlap and interact. For example, studies have found that having an anxiety disorder in early or middle childhood can increase your child’s risk of developing a depressive disorder in later adolescence. Both anxiety and depression can lead to dysfunctional behaviors, including suicidal behaviors, substance use, overeating, emotion suppression, overcontrol, and interpersonal mayhem, which are often behavioral solutions to intolerably painful emotions.The Two Tents Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) utilizes Dialectal Behavioral Therapy - Skills (DBT-S), ACT (Acceptance Commitment Therapy) for Adolescents in the form of DNA-V and exposure therapy. Our unique blending has become the BOLD Living Skills taught to help your young person and your family find more effective ways to regulate their emotions and thereby, their behaviors. All three clinical models have decades of evidence in effectively treating anxiety, depression, and the complications of ADHD, shame and guilt.

The Renew Counseling Center was founded by my wife Kori Hintz-Bohn in 2005. We opened the Anxiety Center at Renew in 2017 to provide an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for adults and will be opening an IOP for adolescents in August 2018 which I will be directing.Due to business model and personnel issues in 2009, I took over day-to-day accounting and payroll duties for approximately a year. During that time we change changed business models, opened the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for eating disorder treatment and regained profitability.Currently, expanding our treatment options and starting an Intensive Outpatient Program for anxiety in late 2016 and I have stepped back into day-to-day duties around outreach to insurance companies and referral sources.

Creatively catalyzing collaboration within Cornerstones of Care and the Community so all can receive the support and access to services (both ours and our partners) they need, even in times of crisis with their first point of contact (call, chat, walk-in, etc.) because our Community is our responsibility. • Utilizing the Collective Impact Model, facilitated extensive community engagement around best practices, solicited feedback and analyzed potential barriers to build a common agenda (strategic plan). • Cast a vision for a regional unified homeless and housing system that is consistent with changes in federal policy and cultivated the energy and willingness of key agencies and systemic partners to move toward that vision. See HTF Unified System Graphic for a visual representation.• Cultivated a strong leadership team comprised of local government officials, the three metropolitan Continuum’s of Care organizations, (Jackson, Johnson and Wyandotte Counties), federally funded agencies, privately funded faith-based agencies and local foundations to support a regional system through challenging barriers (both systemic and inter-personal). • Secured full engagement of the Department of Veteran’s Affairs (VA) and the regional Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to find solutions to housing issues. • Helped community recognize the benefits of a backbone organization to centralize activities that benefit the whole system, such as housing triage and unit location. Also helped the community recognize the limitations of the current data sources and the importance of regional management information system (MIS) that is more comprehensive and outcome focused. • Supported the HTF and multiple project teams to prioritize programs, projects and initiatives into an implementation plan with mutually reinforcing activities. • Developed funding requests to support individual projects and the larger system change initiative.
