About Jason Bunn

In January 2024, I started a new position as Director of Data Services, In this new role I will be leading multiple teams of data engineers as we deliver and optimize the strategic data products for Sentry Insurance. Prior to this role, I led the data platform services organization, responsible for administering the platforms that store mission-critical data in both private and public clouds, efficiently transforming and moving it throughout the enterprise, and reporting and displaying the resulting analytics and insights. The team supports database platforms (including SQL Server, Oracle, Snowflake, and MongoDB), Informatica and Kafka data movement platforms, reporting tools from SAP and Tableau, and analytics solutions through SAS and Apache Spark. Together, they ensure the availability and performance of hundreds of database instances, enhance database security, and help facilitate data movement throughout the enterprise and the translation of that data into insight. The team and I also built and maintained our growing suite of machine learning tooling, enabling analytics professionals to deploy Python and R machine learning models at scale.Prior to leading the Data Platform team, I was a production SQL Server DBA focusing on replication, change data capture, and performance tuning. I led several upgrade efforts and developed many automation scripts to improve and streamline our installation, backup, restore, and deployment processes. I also developed flight software for civilian and military aerospace missions including the Messenger and New Horizons NASA spacecraft and the Defense Satellite Communications System.As a leader, I have enjoyed helping each team member grow their skills and increase their value to the organization. I partner with my team so that each administrator rises to face challenges daily, applying their technical expertise to find innovative solutions to drive business results. As data volumes steadily increase, our skillset has grown as well to help the company derive more and more value from our data.I have invested in my education throughout my career and have earned Master of Science degrees in Computer Science, Aeronautics and Astronautics, and Business Administration.

In this role, I indirectly managed a team of talented DBAs while more directly focusing on our reporting, analytics, and machine learning capabilities and the Data Platform as a whole. I worked with our business areas to better understand the use of tools such as SAS and SQL for data exploration and preparation of data sets for reporting and visualization through tools such as Tableau and Business Objects. My team continued to support the critical data movement and data engineering tooling such as AWS EMR and Kafka. The team plays a leadership role in machine learning engineering in the organization. The team has been pioneering new patterns and strategies to allow the data scientists and advanced analytics team to quickly and easily deploy both R and Python models to easily use data to drive business value.

    Managed a team of direct and indirect reports to ensure the availability, security, and performance of Sentry's data platform assets, focused on Sentry's database platforms. Together with my team, managed a multi-data center, on-prem and cloud-based SQL Server relational database footprint of over 1000 servers and over 1 PB of data, along with multi-terabyte installations of Oracle, Teradata, and our cloud data warehouse footprint via Snowflake. The SQL Server DBA team was selected by their peers as the IT Operations service team of the year every year the associate-driven recognition award was offered.
