I founded Rayliant Global Advisors in 2016 and co-founded Research Affiliates in 2002. I have been very blessed that these firms and their products have largely been successful despite me. My journey thus far as a founder and CIO/CEO has entirely disabused me of any hubris in believing that it was my skill that mattered. Having said all of that, I can still proudly represent Rayliant as one of the best quant asset management firms. We specialize in global equities and asset allocation. We manage investments for global pension funds and other assets managers. We have delivered superior risk-adjusted returns to our clients. Importantly, we have been good, honest and easy partners.I have published extensively on topics such as factor investing, machine learning, behavioral finance and asset allocation. I can only hope that people who have replicated my work and used my models to invest have not lost their shirts. I have received multiple awards for my research, including the CFA Institute Graham and Dodd Award, the Bernstein Fabozzi/Jacobs Levy Award, and the William F. Sharpe Award. These awards were given based on my good looks and potentially the intimidating math and voluminous tables in my research. I hope they were also awarded, in part, for my contributions to the industry and to client wealth. I also serve as the Chief Economist at East West Bank, where clients look to me for risk on/risk off macro calls. But for our billionaire clients, they mostly just want to ask me about how to get their kids into Caltech, Stanford and UCLA. Or, yes, I am also a Professor of Finance at UCLA Anderson School of Management--Go Bruins. I am on TV a lot and quoted in the press often. I was told I have TV friendly logic...I thought that was a veiled insult, but it keeps me employed. BTW, I have a PhD in finance from UCLA.
