Investigating the role of biophysical cues during liver development and fibrotic disease. Major components of the project involve:-Use of atomic force microscopy to characterize biophysical changes that occur during differentiation and disease progression-Investigation of how modulating substrate rigidity influences cell fate determination and hepatic functionality-Development of 3D bioprinting technology to engineer three-dimensional, vascularized, and ordered liver tissue constructs for use in various applications (disease modeling, drug development, etc)

Worked with a small startup to accelerate the development and commercialization of their product. As a team we interviewed over 80 potential customers, key opinion leaders, and industry experts in order to define customer segments, further product development and market placement, assess regulatory risk, and identify potential financing vehicles and key partnerships. Findings helped shape future direction of startup and provided several promising opportunities to pursue.

Major accomplishments of project were:-Synthesized biomaterial surfaces and microparticles using an oriented Jagged-1 ligand immobilization scheme - biomaterials allowed for time-specific and dose-dependent activation of the Notch signaling pathway-Characterized biomaterial properties such as ligand concentration, ligand orientation, and Notch signaling bioactivity-Determined a developmental stage-specific effect of Notch signaling activation during cardiac differentiation of human embryonic stem cells-Demonstrated that Notch activation induces the proliferation of human embryonic stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes
