Much to my surprise, I have become an entrepreneur. Over the past 15 years, I have focused my time and energy on building small businesses by following my personal interests. These businesses span multiple industries, vary in size, and have met with mixed results. What they all have in common is that they have taught me far more about myself and the world around me than any of my educational experiences. Before entering the private sector I spent ten years working in government and higher education. Years as a frontline social services worker taught me the value of effective communication, empathy, and collaboration. Under pressure, you either learn to rely on the knowledge, experience, and generosity of others, or you collapse. As a university professor and researcher, I learned the value of taking time to fully assess a problem or opportunity, how to delegate work based on strengths, and how to present information in a clear and concise manner. Facts and ideas are meaningless without a willing audience.Now, in my work as a tech company leader and game designer, I get to apply what I learned in the public sector while relying on my tendencies toward flexibility, creativity, and decisiveness. In my day job, I partner with entrepreneurs and innovators to imagine, define, and build potentially life-changing technologies. At Boundless, we create MVP and version 1.0 software and applications that seek to modernize and/or revolutionize processes, markets, and interpersonal interactions. At Accidental Cyclops Games, we create experiences that change perceptions, bring joy, and promote inclusivity.
