About Jason Wiegand
I have substantial experience supporting undergraduate and graduate students across disciplines, in addition to guiding middle and HS students and adult learners pursuing their HSEDs. Much of this experience has involved building and leading recruitment and retention efforts for historically underrepresented students, in addition to faculty and staff. Related examples include designing and leading a workforce mentoring program for students attending colleges throughout Iowa, serving as founding co-chair of a regional mentoring program for academic advisors across multiple states and Canadian territories, and founding and serving as Intertribal Chair of the American Indian Faculty/Staff Council at Iowa State University. As a first-generation and multiracial student from a low socioeconomic background, I personally benefitted from the strength of multicultural programming and community. I am acutely aware of the challenges and anxieties that threaten student success and have thrived while supporting students who are rough around the edges, face multiple barriers, or made mistakes and poor choices. I lacked cultural capital and didn’t coast through education at any level, as I checked all those boxes. This gives me an edge in the field of education, where I have experience in recruitment, advising, administration, and leading diversity and inclusion initiatives. I also still work in the hospitality industry and have spent quality years working outside of the field of education, as a commercial fisherman, a full-service gas station attendant, a combine operator, front and back of the house at restaurants, and even as a guy throwing fish at Pike Place Market in Seattle, WA. This is what influences my work and sets me apart.
Listed skills include Public Speaking, Community Outreach, Higher Education, Academic Advising, and 45 others.
