Phased Array/Antenna Engineer & Owner

Current

Phased array, antenna, and RF consulting. Building online simulation tools for RF Systems and Phased Arrays.

Oct 2023 - Present

Senior Principal Systems Engineer (Rf/Antenna Systems)

Greensboro, North Carolina, Us

Resident expert in phased arrays and antenna design. Development of custom and unique phased array module software for customer use and internal testing (using Python and PyQt). Maintain and developed internal phased array analysis and system tools covering diverse topics from optimum element reduction to save DC power to linear polarization scanning techniques. Build CST and AWR scripts to improve design workflows. Design of many planar phased arrays including detailed antenna design, corporate power combiner networks, and element placement optimization.

Aug 2020 - Oct 2023

Principal Systems Engineer (Rf/Antenna Systems)

Greensboro, North Carolina, Us

Mar 2019 - Aug 2020

Systems Engineer (Rf/Antenna Systems)

Greensboro, North Carolina, Us

Jan 2017 - Mar 2019

Rf Antenna Engineer

Redmond, Wa, Us

Design and analysis of Kymeta's Metamaterial antenna models. Acted as antenna design, project engineer, and technical lead on multiple projects. Participated in design reviews and regularly met with customers.

Nov 2015 - Jan 2017

Chief Engineer, Advanced Aperture Solutions

New York, Ny, Us

Advanced Aperture Solutions (AAS) designs electronically steerable true-time delay (TTD) phased arrays and load-bearing conformal antennas. I participated in every stage of the programs from proposal to production. My roles included chief engineer, antenna design, RF design, firmware, and testing.Chief engineer and systems engineer of multiple phased arrays. Duties included requirements management (analysis based), RF cascade analysis, management plans, and engineering tasking (while still designing and testing). Heavy involvement with PCB fabrication and assembly shops and subcontractor/vendors of components.Antenna design and analysis using CST Microwave Studio (TD and FD). Designs varied in requirements such as: circular polarization, dual-linear polarization, multi-layer composites, aperture coupled patches, Vivaldi, tightly-coupled dipoles, octave bandwidth.RF design and modeling using AWR Microwave Studio and AXIEM of power dividers and combiners and time-delay PCBs.Novel firmware development for time-delay modules, using C. Firmware used UDP and I2C communication protocols and supported real-time time-delay calculation for beam steering (e.g. "array agnostic").Automated testing development using LabVIEW. Built the automated testing system for AAS. Automates antenna pattern measurements, gain, noise figure, P1dB, IP3, and IP2 measurements. Environment was able to significantly reduce the testing time of phased arrays (from multiple days to around 4 hours with the same amount of data).

May 2009 - Aug 2009

Graduate Coop Engineer

New York, Ny, Us

Testing and troubleshooting of RF, microwave, mixed signal boards and architectures including: true time delay modules (for phased arrays), RF amplifiers, and RF switch matrices. Extended the automated noise figure tests to include the Agilent N8975A Noise Figure Meter using Agilent VEE with communication using GPIB. Developed a procedure (in VEE) for performing automated noise figure measurements using a spectrum analyzer, a noise source, and the Y factor. Procedure was implemented to save the customer money by removing the necessity of a dedicated, costly noise figure analyzer.
