About Jason Heppler

I am a software developer and educator working to advance the production of knowledge and enable access to information. I have ten years of experience with technology and teaching in digital history, academic libraries, research centers, and higher education. I am currently the senior web developer at the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University, where we're building digital and public history for the web. Previously, I was the Digital Engagement Librarian at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and before that the Academic Technology Specialist in the Center for Interdisciplinary Digital Research at Stanford University Libraries and a member of the research staff at the Center for Spatial and Textual Analysis at Stanford University where I directed and developed technology projects for innovative research and teaching.I am a historian of the North American West and environmental history. My second book, _Silicon Valley and the Environmental Inequalities of High-Tech Urbanism_ Univ. of Oklahoma Press, 2024), tells how cities organized around high-tech industries, suburban growth, and urban expansion prompted intensified race and class stratification, strengthened the political power of elites, worsened human health, and introduced widespread pollution. Environmental advocacy attempted to resolve these challenges, but often merely shifted the problems to new places. Suburban capitalism and federal funding deeply transformed this place as new housing, the recruitment or founding of new companies, and urban infrastructure deeply reshaped the landscape.My current book project is exploring a broader regional history of ranching, public lands, grasslands, and the Sagebrush Rebellion on the Great Plains.
