Using Node.js and JavaScript to implement a fleet of microservices that are used to acquire digital assets and metadata for the shows that will stream on our platform. The applications were deployed on AWS using Docker and Kubernetes to provide containers and scaling. The CI/CD pipeline was built using a complex combination of GitHub Actions, CircleCI jobs and harness configuration. The majority of my contributions were in the area of improving system stability and clarifying the boundaries between the different microservices in the fleet to improve the success rate for newly ingested data. The implementation language was JavaScript running on Node.js.

Using Node.js and a proprietary React-based UI framework to build a great user experience for students applying for financial aid. The applications were deployed on AWS using Docker and Kubernetes to provide containers and scaling. The CI/CD pipeline was built using a combination of custom scripting and GitHub Actions. The majority of my contributions were in the area of improving code quality and modularizing different subsystems within the application to allow for better reusability. Using Node.js serverless functions to build a new API for tracking the progress of wells from the time a site is being considered until the well is shutdown. Working with Azure pipelines to automate deployment and infrastructure setup for the API so that any merge to the main branch was automatically tested, packaged and deployed with confidence. Collaborating with the user interface team to provide an API that best matches the design of the user experience. This fast-paced, short contract allowed me the opportunity to leverage my agile development skills to produce a solid system in a very short time frame.

Used JavaScript on the client and server to create great experiences for employees. Focused on enabling customers to easily create and publish professional quality content for their employees. The applications are built with JavaScript and verified by an extensive suite of automated tests written in Java using JUnit and Selenium. While ServiceNow provides proprietary implementations of database storage and querying, messaging systems, and even its own data centers, underlying the platform are SQL databases, Java, Maven, Node.js, AngularJS, ReactJS, Docker and many other industry leading technologies. In order to perform the duties of a Senior Software Engineer an extensive knowledge of those underlying technologies is required and used regularly.

Used Node.js, MongoDB, Kafka and Redis to build infrastructure, backend tools and microservices for e-commerce, social media and anything else Holonis needed to make the world better. Designed and implemented the basic microservice architecture and evolved it to keep up with the ever-changing needs of the organization. The highlight of the position was the creation of the Node.js modules used to interact with Kafka, perform REST requests and handle responses, the all-in-one-module test suite utilities and many others. Piloted and evangelized for modularizing our monolithic code by separating it into small, focused npm packages. Holonis applications and services were designed for and deployed to AWS.

Used Java 8, Spring and Maven to provide best of breed features and performance for the main marketing website. The purpose of the role was to help make the existing website software more modular, performant and maintainable. One proud moment was the successful integration of a new A/B test selection library to replace a coin flip system previously used for selecting which content a user would see. Besides significant performance improvements, the new system was intentionally designed to require no storage on our servers to track which content a user should see.

Used Java 8, Spring, JPA/Hibernate and Maven to build electronic ordering kiosks for clients all over the world. Created a deployment system that delivered software and configuration changes to a large number of kiosks in remote locations around the globe. Designed the system such that it was able to tolerate low bandwidth and intermittent connections and was able to catch up if the machine was turned off when new software updates were ready. The majority of my contributions were to the software delivery part of the stack. Leveraged AWS features to allow globally distributed kiosk machines to access resources with nearly 100% availability and improved latency.

Used Node, Angular, React, Grails and Java with PostgreSQL, Neo4j and Kafka to create and improve information technology tools for our biotechnology scientists. My original focus was on cloud-based services including a search engine and catalog for biotech research data. Ongoing projects include bringing an older LIMS application to the Cloud Foundry on AWS, providing APIs that allow access to in-house, legacy data sources from the AWS cloud and creating data import and streaming services that get the right data to the right people and programs.

Used Grails and AngularJS with SQL and RabbitMQ to develop custom supply chain software solutions for customers and for internal use. Also maintained and enhanced existing applications written with Java, Spring, Hibernate and Maven. Provided technical leadership and advanced development skills on the team that created a new warehouse order-fulfillment tracking system. It was great to have the opportunity to collaborate on features and requirements directly with the in-house users of the application in an agile way.

Used Java, Mule, Spring, Hibernate, Maven, and SQL to develop Web Services and RESTful services that instructed the savvisdirect cloud to provision our customers’ purchases. The focus of these services was to operate VMWare and AppLogic hypervisors to provision virtual resources based on new orders, customer control panel actions and customer REST API requests. savvisdirect offered a suite of virtual infrastructure similar to the parts of AWS that provide virtual machines, networks and data centers. In this short six months, implemented an end-to-end solution for selecting a customized virtual machine, network and an OS image. The requestor would be notified when their request was completed so that they could begin using their fully provisioned and functioning VM.

Used Java, Spring, Hibernate/JPA, Maven and Swing to develop applications to streamline the biotechnology research pipeline and improve the commercial quality assurance verification system. The focus of these applications was to track the genetic material, experiment data and other significant details for Monsanto products moving through the development pipeline and beyond. During the first six months with Monsanto, working with two other developers: used perl, bash, awk and SQL to develop a replacement for the existing custom data warehousing software. The goal was to retire the VMS servers which hosted the existing software. The project was a success despite tight deadlines and the thousands of VMS scripts that needed to be converted. Was asked to stay on for many other projects.

Used Java, XSLT, Maven, Spring and Hibernate to develop core components for several web-based applications including the main customer portal. Worked with a small team of senior developers to optimize performance of the main consumer web application, focusing on reducing wait times for users. The team focused on identifying and removing redundant calls for the same information from remote services and reducing the number of round trips to the databases.

Used C#, SVG, JavaScript and SQL to implement an asset customization feature for our digital asset management application. Designed and implemented the high-performance SVG rendering engine powered by .NET and the Windows API. A set of SVG templates and user-provided values were combined to generate documents. Possible output formats included PDF and PostScript for printing as well as PNG and JPEG images used as interactive preview images during customization.

Used C#, VB.Net and SQL to create and maintain a system for tracking and communicating transmission, generation and outage schedules between Ameren and the many other electric companies they cooperate with across the United States and Canada. Designed and implemented a job scheduling system that allowed processes to be started automatically based on a wide range of differing schedule types. Participated in standard writing for an XML schema that was used throughout the industry to communicate scheduling information.

Used perl, shell scripts, awk, PL/SQL and C/C++ to develop, configure and maintain a complex, custom software build process. The focus of the effort was on optimizing aspects of the build process. The work resulted in a >50% improvement in the time required to create a new build environment and a toolset for quickly diagnosing and correcting common build problems.

Used VisualBasic and Oracle to create reservation tracking systems, order tracking systems, electronic record keeping for legal documents and materials inventory and use tracking systems. My position included everything from sitting down with the client initially to discuss what they needed and how we could provide it, writing of proposals, project planning, implementation, installation, and on-site support of the delivered applications.
