I work with a team of editors that reviews Kohl's various projects for accuracy. A sampling of what we work on includes the dozens of versions of print advertising that go out across the country each week, direct mail, email, social media, websites, point-of-sale screen savers, right down to the packaging on store brands. A recent long-term project had me up to my ears in 5,000 lines of Kohls.com copy, which needed to be scrubbed and rewritten as part of a customer experience improvement goal. Ultimately, it's my job to be sure that mistakes don't cost the company untold sums of money, that our communication is as clear as it can be and is grammatically correct, and that our advertising doesn't end up on Jay Leno's "Headlines." (I made up that last part, but it's true. Yes, I know Jimmy Fallon now hosts the Tonight Show; bear with me while I think of a better punchline :-)

Copywriter for Food Network. I write the prose and superlatives that go on the packaging for Food Network products — test kitchen notes, product features and the like. Working with the product developers and studying the products themselves, I help the Food Network team create dozens of new and updated products each spring and fall season. I can make a crummy product sound like the next infomercial smash, (except we don't sell crummy products). I do this concurrently with my editing work. No, I've never met Guy Fieri.

One of my bigger projects (and most satisfying) included writing and rewriting work for the Nevada Bureau of Land Management's visitor guides for the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.Clients include ReMIND Magazine, Milwaukee Magazine, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel and Reno Gazette-Journal.

Direct department of seven writers and copy editors who help produce the newspaper's daily Local Life section and online content. Direct and edit daily content in print and online. Picked up lead responsibility for department and grew Local Life section to have 25 percent more local features. Lobbied for and added new outdoors content to enhance section. Oversaw and crafted extensive redesigns of features and entertainment publications in 2005, 2007, 2010 and 2011, and two website buildouts in 2008 and 2011.Other duties include laying out pages, handling budgets, working with writers, writing for print and web on tight daily deadlines, maintaining social media accounts, maintaining contacts with local and national public-relations reps and attending editors' meetings. Served as main contact for reader outreach for features.
