MY FIRST WEEK of design college was a dervish of color, a whirring of machines, clattering of shearsand scratching of pencils that left me with only a single clear memory - my mentors warning how few of us would ‘make it’ in the Canadian apparel industry. 20 years on I understand that warning all too well and was able to make my own way by putting to rest my preconcieved notions of whatit means to be a fashion designer in Canada. I’m a designer alright, but I’m also a business person,an advertiser, a manager, a licensing expert, an artist, a sourcing director, a trend researcher anda global sourcing specialist. Because that’s how you ‘make it’ in the Canadian apparel industry.I now put all those skills to work bringing great brands and products to life.I’M SO GRATEFUL for all the people I've been lucky to learn from and every bit of experience I’ve grown from:-late nights folding mountainous throngs of clothes at the end of a busy Christmas season at Le Chateau-cutting leather goods at Joeffer Caoc’s Queen Street atelier-studiously learning what quality control means at Duet Designs, one garment at a time-growing a women’s apparel brand from 5 people up to 60 through customer focused design at Haggar Canada Co.-reinventing looks for precious girls and their dolls at the iconic Canadian toy company Avonlea Traditions-striving to bring excitement back to Sears Canada apparel brands in it’s twilight hours-diving headlong into the minutae of children’s wear technical design at Hatley Apparel Co. -blazing a path to managing hundreds of NCAA and sport’s team licenses and creating logoed apparel for them at Bruzer SportsgearWORKING in the Canadian apparel industry brings new challenges every single day, and I wouldn’thave it any other way.
