I'm an investigative reporter and regular contributor to Al Jazeera America, Al Jazeera English, The Guardian, VICE News and other publications. I report extensively on Guantanamo, terrorism, national security, human rights, open government and civil liberties issues. Much of my reporting is heavily based on documents, obtained through the Freedom of Information Act or via sources I have cultivated over the past decade.I conducted the first ever interview with James Mitchell, the so-called architect of the CIA's torture program and reported it for The Guardian.After a 10 year investigation, I obtained the highly secretive diaries of Abu Zubaydah, the first high-value detainee captured after 9/11 and the guinea pig for the CIA's torture program. I reported a six part series based on these diaries for Al Jazeera America.

Founded the online publication, The Public Record, an independent investigative news organization dedicated to publishing hard-hitting, in-depth reportage on domestic and international issues and cutting-edge, biting commentary.

Covered Guantanamo, counterterrorism, national security, human rights, open government and civil liberties issues. I cultivated sources and pried loose government documents using the Freedom of Information Act--and, when necessary, the courts--in order to back up the revelations and assertions in my investigative reports. I was awarded a "crowdfunding" grant by the Freedom of the Press Foundation in January 2013 to continue my FOIA work and coverage of Guantanamo.

In addition to managing reporters, interns, fellows and helping direct the organization's daily news coverage, I also produced exclusive, in-depth investigative reports on counterterrorism, intelligence, national security and the energy industry. My reporting during this time frame included more than a dozen reports on the safety and integrity problems plaguing BP and the treatment of "war on terror" detainees at Guantanamo Bay. Promoted to lead investigative reporter in December 2011.

Reported extensively on the leak of covert CIA officer Valerie Plame Wilson and the case of the "missing" White House emails. Interviewed on-camera nearly all of the US attorneys who were fired in the scandal that cost former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales his job and published a series of investigative reports exposing the meteoric rise of fundamentalist Christianity within the Army and Air Force. Additionally, I produced several in-depth reports about Halliburton's government contracts and the company's questionable practices in Iraq, dug deep into safety and integrity issues plaguing BP's Prudhoe Bay operations and investigated the CIA's torture program.

Wrote investigative reports on the treatment of prisoners detained at Guantanamo, Halliburton's government contracts, questionable pre-war Iraq intelligence and the Bush administration's "enhanced interrogation program." This was part the Times' ambitious plan to increase circulation by zoning its newspapers in Los Angeles and Orange County. As City Editor of two Orange County Our Times sections, I managed a staff of four reporters, wrote a weekly column, and assigned news stories.
