This is where I learned my craft. I moved my way up from an entry-level Service Technician all the way up to Engineering Specialist. Technology rapidly advanced while working for Landis and Gyr. I started working on PDP-11 Host P1 Systems to Insight for PC-based System 600 and Apogee systems. Significant projects included: TES at the UCSD Medical Center, Co-Generation at Scripps Memorial Hospital, migrated PDP-11 to PC front ends at Green Hospital, U.S. Department of Labor BMS upgrade, the World Bank BMS upgrade, pneumatic controls for the National Archives expansion, chiller plant programming and commissioning at San Diego Airport, fire alarm system at the Pan American Health Organization and Pacific Bell Trade Street.

This is where I paid my dues. Work my way through four years of an Apprenticeship Program for the Piping Trades. I specialized in pneumatic / electromechanical controls and HVAC service. This was a hard time. For four years, I attended evening apprentice school twice a week and every other Saturday while working a full-time position. The experience was outstanding and world-class. The Hall assigned me to several elite contractors, including Honeywell, Johnson Controls, and Robertshaw. Significant projects included Controls for the Mobil Oil World Headquarters, building operations for FBI Engineering Research Facility, HVAC improvements at the Smithsonian Institute Measure of American History Information Age Exhibit Remodel, District Building Steam Retrofit, DEA Academy, HVAC improvements at NSA Fort Meade Energy Retrofit, and controls upgrade at the National Press Club.

This is where I know that this was the trade for me! Part-time and summer job while in high school. This was the first job where I got to use my technical skills. I worked in an air conditioner repair shop where we repaired and serviced through the wall units that were 2 tons and under. Did lots of compressors and fan motor replacements. Also, lots of maintenance tasks as well: cleaning coils, changing filters, checking refrigerant charge, and lubrication. We serviced 5 to 10 units per day in a production workshop. It was an excellent place for beginners to learn the trade.

This is where it all started. Part-time and summer position while in high school, and first job in the HVAC industry. The job required working in the ductwork fabrication shop: operating the breaks; operating s-slip, Pittsburg, & drive machines. Generally, I did character-building "crap" work, such as cleaning and sweeping, getting lunch orders, keeping the coffee hot and fresh, and loading and unloading trucks. I wouldn't trade this experience for the world.
