American Co-Director, Hopkins–Nanjing Center For Chinese And American Studies
The American Co-director of the Hopkins-Nanjing Center is the primary representative of Johns Hopkins University in Nanjing, China. The Co-director reports to the SAIS associate dean for finance and administration and works closely with the HNC Washington Support Office. The Center is a 50-50 joint venture with Nanjing University so considerable negotiation is required.The American Co-Director works closely with the Chinese Co-director, appointed by Nanjing University, as well as with other administrators and faculty of Nanjing University. The American Co-director supervises 4 American staff members and co-supervises more than 40 Chinese staff members who are jointly appointed by the two universities. A key task is providing intellectual and programmatic leadership to the international (non-Chinese) faculty, as well as supervising daily administration. The Center is equivalent to a small professional school so the Co-director has all the responsibilities of a president or dean, VP for student affairs, VP for administration, and chief faculty liaison.Since all the students and American faculty live in Center facilities, he/she also has significant duties regarding housing and facilities. The American Co-director also liaises with other directors from other JHU schools and programs that intend to use the Center in the future, and the American Co-director is an integral part of the team concerned with fundraising, namely the SAIS Development Office and JHU, as well as the JHU development officer in China. This includes working to build and maintain the Hopkins-Nanjing Advisory Council.The American Co-Director works closely with the HNC Director in the Washington Support Office on recruitment of faculty and students and on all financial/budgetary issues.
