Good software developers make order from chaos and streamline business processes. Some developers like to go a step further, add some style and have a little bit of fun along the way. That's how I see myself. I'm the guy who makes the process enjoyable by doing it correctly the first time, avoiding paths that lead to unwanted complexity and finding the paths that ensure you operate strategically, with purpose and intention.

Senior Software EngineerCompliancemate: Food Safety Technology ® May 2017 - Nov 2018Lawrenceville, Ga, UsFood safety is the business model. I build mobile apps that interface with bluetooth thermal probes to collect food safety information, required by the FDA. For the most part, the software I create for ComplianceMate is general data collection process automation work. All the concerns you would expect: user authentication, data replication, workflow management and web api interfaces apply. However, I am most proud of the components I created to interface with bluetooth thermal probes.ComplianceMate had a special challenge. They needed a cross-platform service that would allow any bluetooth thermal probe, regardless of the manufacturer or whether the protocol was BT classic or BT low-energy to interface with Android, iOS or Windows applications. It was one of the greatest challenges of my career but I pulled it off. -
Senior Software EngineerGolfnow Dec 2015 - Feb 2017Orlando, Fl, UsGolfNow dominates the online tee-time sales market through its world-class web site and mobile ecommerce apps for iOS and Android. I did some work for GolfNow to support their tee-time sales apps. However, most of my time there was spent on one of their side-businesses.GolfNow provides many services to golf courses, including a point-of-sale application for food services (i.e. snack-shop and snack-cart). Much of the work I did was conceptual in nature. Specifically, I designed an architecture that overcame many of the technological challenges the company was facing -- especially data replication and off-line availability.Much of the work I did was with Objective-C, a language for which, regardless of public opinion, I still have a lot of respect. Like most modern programming languages, it's one of those situations in which "with great power comes great responsibility." There are many ways that you can impale yourself when you have a really sharp sword. Much of my work on their products involved trying to address anti-patterns that impaired maintainability -- a considerable challenge for which I am well-suited. -
Senior Software EngineerWalt Disney World Aug 2011 - Aug 2015Lake Buena Vista, Florida, UsThe happiest place on earth has a lot of assets. A lot. The need for automating data collection to report the state of these assets and to issue work orders to maintain these assets is huge. So, I was hired to lead a special project to build a system that would make this process much simpler.Art directors at The Walt Disney Company are tasked with reporting the status of building facades, lighting, gardening, paint, brick, etc. If any visible thing is broken, missing or out of sorts in any way, it must be reported and work-orders issued to get it fixed. The existing process was paper-based. Yes, paper. So I built an asset management system designed for the iPad to bring this process into the correct century.Using this iPad App, Disney’s art directors inspect assets and rapidly make notes about their condition. The resulting data is exported to a SQL database where it is then moved to an enterprise asset management system to generate work orders. The real key to the success of this app is the sophisticated domain and workflow design. Data collection 'events' are organized into 'Walks' and 'Scenes' that represent sets of assets grouped by physical location. However, the condition of different asset types ultimately are reported to different management groups and systems. The domain design supports the efficiency of one person being able to collect asset data once in a given area while reporting the collected data to different departments and work-order systems. This type of thing can only be exciting to a computer programmer I guess... -
Senior Software EngineerInsurance Office Of America Jan 2013 - Jan 2015Longwood, Fl, UsYou wouldn't think the insurance business would be that interesting but it faces some extraordinary information system challenges. My experience designing workflow systems came in particularly handy for some projects at IOA but most of my time was spent on the president's pet project, a medical data collection app for iOS.In response to changing regulations in the medical field, the owner of IOA along with his friend and physician came up with a concept to fill an unaddressed IT need in in clinical practices. Because medical records and billing requirements depend on accurate application of medical codes, code sets that consist of tens of thousands of diagnostic, evaluation and procedure codes, tools are desperately needed to validate correct use and ensure physicians do not over-rely on their memory.I helped address this need with a mobile application that allowed doctors to securely track their patient rounds and make notes using ICD-9/10 medical codes. They could research these sets of codes using an iPad and push their notes up to a cloud data store accessible to their back-office billing processors. This system was designed to improve speed and accuracy, preventing billing mistakes and omissions. It was a very clever system if I do say so myself.
