I was a National Library of Medicine Fellow and a PhD Candidate in the Department of Biomedical Informatics at the University of Utah. I evaluated the impact of computerized clinical decision support (CDS) for post-transplant immunosuppressive care laboratory monitoring on workflow processes and patient outcomes. In addition, I assessed the readiness of transplant centers nationwide to implement transplant-specific CDS systems.

As a member of the Student Editorial Board for JAMIA, I gained hands-on experience in the academic peer-review process and the operation of a scientific medical journal. I learned to provide critical and constructive feedback of scientific manuscripts in a well-written review. I analyzed the reviews of other expert reviewers of the same manuscript to improve my own peer reviews.

I performed troubleshooting and improved the network and information systems for the Logan City School District. During this time, I developed skills necessary to gather, analyze, and resolve software, hardware, and networking issues. This employment opportunity has taught me analytical problem-solving skills and has given me insight into effective project implementation.

As a coordinator, I managed the efforts of nine Supplemental Instruction Leaders. Additionally, I assisted in training more than twenty Supplemental Instruction Leaders each semester who were in the program, helping them to utilize effective evidence-based teaching methods.I also taught as a Supplemental Instruction Leader of chemistry, from first-year general chemistry to organic chemistry. I organized three teaching sessions per week to reinforce important principles from the class taught by the professor and to help students learn and apply effective study and test-taking skills. My goal was to promote self-sufficiency in learning.

I worked in the lab of Dr. Keith Mott, a plant physiologist. I assisted in researching the mechanism that causes spatial fluctuations in stomata, focusing on the potential relationship between guard cells and epidermal cells. These fluctuations are an essential factor of plant photosynthesis and thus have immense potential in applied research. I conducted experiments by setting up specimens and the environment, gathering data about the magnitude of spatial fluctuations under experimental conditions, and analyzing the variables of interest.
