  • Benefitfocus
    Director Of Software Engineering
    Benefitfocus Feb 2005 - Jun 2012
    Charleston, Sc, Us
This period included two distinct phases of work:First, I was responsible for oversight of the eBilling application team. While this product is very well architected the team was also very good and would never accept current state as good enough. We set about listing out all of the things that could be better. We came up with some key improvements that created a safety net, preventing files from failing mid stream, and implemented some key process changes that resulted in higher quality and lower operational cost.Second, I was responsible for technical project delivery. This involves all aspects from the inception of a work request all the way to post production support. Involves the management and leadership of a set of cross functional teams that include Project Managers, Client Joint Test Leads, Design Leads, Business Analysts, QA Analysts, Software Engineers, Architects, and Managers. This was the genesis of the idea for the dedicated team model.Key contributions:- Implemented, "The Safety Net", which provided constant monitoring and failsafe processes if multi-step files failed during any step of the process.- Reduced operating costs.- Expanded automated test suites, increasing customer satisfaction.- Implemented corporate wide change control process and IT change oversight committee.- Implemented all projects on time and at or under budget.
  • Benefitfocus
    Manager Of Software Engineering
    Benefitfocus Dec 2007 - Aug 2009

There were two roles during this time period as well - this included lateral move to an architectural management position in 2008.In my first role I developed a new position that the company had not had before - a fully dedicated technical project manager. In this role I paired with key customers, and their ongoing projects, then led fluid teams of 5-20 engineers and QA to deliver on projects. There was a key focus on bridging communications between the business, technology, and the client. This role worked so well it became the corporate standard for all clients after the first year.Subsequently, I was responsible for the Product Architecture Applications group with a responsibility for focusing on architecture, security, resource planning, long and short term product and team vision, cost reductions, and associate management and development. This was a more nebulous role where my main value add was to find ways to save us money, make us money, or make our technology better.Key contributions:- Delivered a large volume of successful and on time projects in year 1.- By year 2 the new role had become the norm and was being expanded to include other clients and additional managers.- Established key partnership relationship and developed technical interfaces, opening large potential sales pipeline to company.
