Graduate Research AssistantUniversity Of Florida May 2011 - Sep 2016Gainesville, Florida, UsMy research focuses on the characterization, mechanics, computational modeling, and design implementation of shape memory polymers (SMP) actuators. The SMPs are combined with a carbon-fiber-reinforced-polymer (CFRP) substrate to create an unimorph composite actuator (UCA). A UCA is an element capable of bi-stable configuration when supplied with an external stimulus consisting of one active layer (SMP) to which the stimulus is applied and one inactive layer (CFRP) that supports the active layer. The primary goal of this research is to develop a better understanding of the mechanics of these actuators and use them in reconfigurable, deployable structures such as micro air vehicle wings and satellite arrays. I primarily use digital image correlation (DIC), a non-contact, full-field shape and deformation measurement technique to obtain full-field displacements and strains of experiments using these UCAs. I have investigated the fixity, recoverability, and thermal stability of the UCAs to determine the viability of using such actuators in reconfigurable structures. I have also characterized both the SMP and composite materials using both universal testing machines and full-field methods. In addition to experimentally evaluating the actuators, I have analytically modeled the fixity and thermal stability which were validated both experimentally and using ABAQUS finite element modeling. Additional projects include using DIC to determine full field deflections of passively adaptive micro air vehicle (MAV) wings in wind tunnel settings, conducting a pilot study on the ratcheting behavior of titanium and aluminum alloys, quantifying the tensile and shear properties of 3D printed materials, and constructing carbon fiber golf shafts with unique fiber orientation that exhibit bend-twist coupling behavior. I have also coauthored multiple grant applications with my professor and reviewed several journal papers during my time as a graduate student. -
Micro Air Vehicles Lab ManagerUniversity Of Florida Apr 2010 - Sep 2016Gainesville, Florida, UsI work with both graduate and undergraduate students to develop and build Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs) and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) ranging in size from 6 inches to 3 feet. These aircraft are manufactured using carbon fiber pre-preg, Kevlar, fiberglass, silicone rubber, or a combination of these materials depending upon the project and aircraft use. I also utilize CAD software and MATLAB coding to develop wing molds for UAVs. These molds are cut via CNC machine and used during the composite layup process. I am responsible for training new undergraduate research assistants the proper composite layup techniques, micro air vehicle manufacturing, and avionics integration. I also mentor high school students in the precollegiate Student Science Training Program (SSTP) during summer semesters who work in the lab on various projects. I oversee the bi-annual laboratory inspections and perform all routine maintenance on lab equipment including universal testing machines, vacuum pumps, vacuum deposition machines, composite ovens, 3D printers, and general laboratory tools. Additionally, I am in charge of purchasing and accurately inventorying the laboratories supplies including micro air vehicle parts and composites construction raw materials. -
