Structural Engineering ManagerTesla Dec 2020 - PresentAustin, Texas, UsManage a group of PEs and EITs to accelerate the world’s use of solar energy. -
Professional EngineerTesla Jun 2017 - Dec 2020Austin, Texas, UsSame role as SolarCity, just a name change due to the acquisition -
Professional EngineerSolarcity Aug 2014 - Jun 2017San Mateo, Ca, UsThe projects I review and sign off on are single family and multi-family residential structures for roof top solar arrays and the installation of energy storage equipment mounted on their walls. I check the existing roof and wall framing by complete the structural calculations for vertical and lateral loading. I review and mentor the work completed by EITs. I am the Engineer of Record with the “reasonable charge” role on the projects I approve for permit submittal. The projects I review are located across the country with different design criteria for snow, wind, and seismic. I have personally reviewed and was the engineer of record on thousands of houses from eighteen different states. I also assist other engineers when prudent engineering judgment is required. The houses are existing, we use our in-house surveying team that I coordinate with to gather existing framing data and photos from the sites. The data from site is entered in to in-house software by our design team. The software helps generate the plans and calculations (spreadsheet). Next a team of engineer-in-training that I mentor review the data and complete the calculations. I guide both the EIT and designers in the plans preparation and structural analysis for the final submittal documents. As needed when damage or under designed conditions are found, repairs and upgrades are specified to bring the structure back to code compliance. The roof framing we mount on is either wood trusses, rafters, or plywood i-joists. The wall framing we mount on is wood, steel, masonry, or concrete. -
Senior Structural EngineerStantec Oct 2010 - Jul 2014Edmonton, Alberta, CaI am responsible for structural engineering calculations for vertical, lateral, and impact loadings on heavy industrial facilities for surface and underground mining. Additionally, I assist project managers in planning and implementing projects within the civil/structural discipline.I have supervised designers in preparing structural drawings for unique framing systems in a Mongolian mine. The calculations required use of multiple design codes, software, and references from South African mining, AISC, ACI, STAAD, MS Excel, Blodgett, to other lifting/impact load references.I have completed a project that required numerous site visits to an Arizona surface mine processing plant where modifications and safety upgrades were required; the plant was initially designed and constructed in the mid-1970s.I have visited an Indonesian mine to work with the on-site project team in collecting information related to a fixed facilities project underground. This project included overhead bridge cranes, monorails, jib cranes, single story and two story office structures, religious, medical clinics, and lunchroom facilities. The design concepts I helped develop are being implemented into a new project at the same site. I am the lead structural engineer on this new project. -
Structural EngineerA. V. Schwan Mar 2008 - Sep 2010I was responsible for entire structural design packages in the retail, commercial, and education sectors.A majority of the projects were low rise buildings constructed from masonry bearing/shear walls and steel roof diaphragms. Some of the projects I completed were steel moment frames, cast in place shear/bearing walls, and tilt-up concrete wall structures. The roof diaphragms I analyzed were of steel deck with steel joists and others with plywood and glulam beams. I was responsible for all structural analysis and preparation of the calculation booklets. I directed drafters in the assembly of the drawings from plans to details. These documents were submitted for city review and I responded to comments. During the construction phase I conducted special structural inspections and answered questions from contractors.

Structural DesignerPaul Koehler Consulting Engineers Jun 2005 - Mar 2008I completed gravity load calculations for dead and live loads on beams, columns, bearing walls, one-way slabs, two-way slabs, and foundations. The structures I designed were comprised of steel, concrete, masonry, wood, and light gauge steel construction. I completed seismic and wind analysis on flexible and ridged diaphragms, steel braced frames, concrete shear walls, masonry shear walls, and wood shear walls. The building industries I designed for include medical, commercial retail, commercial office, community centers, single and multi-family residential, high rise residential (16-stories), aviation hangers, and pre-engineered building foundations.I used structural design software and hand calculations to complete my work. When the engineering phase was over, I completed responses to city review comments, requests for information, and shop drawing reviews.

Architectural Project ManagerMiller Brewing Company Jun 2002 - Jun 2005Chicago, Il, UsAt Miller Brewing I established initial concepts and implementation plans for construction projects to upgrade, maintain, and improve the facilities of the breweries around the country.I completed site visits and field data collection trips to local facilities. The structures ranged from more than one-hundred years old to new. I led feasibility analyses and made recommendations to management for priority among architectural, civil, and industrial projects.I was responsible for development of project scopes, requests for proposals, reviewing bids, preparing funding requests, contract awarding, and construction management. The scale of the projects I worked on ranged from $25k to $1mil.
