I work at EPA's Region 1 office in Boston in the Water Division, providing oversight to water infrastructure funding and offering technical assistance for water innovation, energy efficiency, and related topics. Originally hired into the Energy and Climate Unit to convince drinking water and wastewater utilities to conserve energy and to use on-site renewable energy sources, my job has since expanded to cover all facets of innovation in the water/wastewater industry. In partnership with the NSF, DOE, and WERF, I worked to develop a national test bed network for development and validation of innovative water technologies. From 2004-7, I worked in the water technical unit, a law enforcement unit that enforced the Clean Water Act and Safe Drinking Water Act.

Working with teams as large as 60 people, I build unusual sculptures including 2 giant, climbable typewriters; giant letterpressed poetry panels; a mixtape dispensing machine; a mobile waiting room; a photobooth; and more. I have also assisted other artists in a number of large installations. I am currently seeking funding to build a functional 1200 square foot record player.

I don't do this full time, but I do maintain an active real estate sales license and occasionally help friends and colleagues buy or sell residential real estate. I was awarded a competitive position in this leadership development program which places high-performing candidates at other federal agencies for six months. In my time at GSA, I worked in the Public Building Service senior leadership area. I assisted in Design & Construction and Leasing on projects as diverse as solar permitting in Vermont, Art in Architecture in Maine, leasing facilities for the Veterans Health Administration in New Hampshire, and the negotiations for a new/refurbished courthouse facility in Connecticut.

I had the pleasure of writing about music festivals and doing show reviews for a number of outlets including Jambase, the Greenbase blog, and the Roving Festival Writer for a number of years. Among my interviews: Perry Farrell, Saul Williams, STS9, Ken Jordan of the Crystal Method, State Radio, and Susan Tedeschi. I covered festivals including Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Rothbury, and Langerado.

During college, I got frustrated with the cost of textbooks and started www.textbookrevolution.org to publicize the availability of free online textbooks. The site was mentioned in BusinessWeek.com, USA Today, NPR's Marketplace, US News and World Reports, and many others. I eventually sold the site to Freeload Press, a textbook publisher with a disruptive business model, and it lives on today under their stewardship.

Before going to college, I worked on all kinds of boats. I started out as a deckhand and eventually worked my way up to US Coast Guard 100-ton Master of Near Coastal Vessels and an Able-Bodied Seaman's license. I worked jobs by the day, week, season, or full-time. My smallest boat was an 18' inflatable, from which I gave over 1000 nature tours in the estuaries of South Carolina in the summers of 1998 and 1999. My largest was the 140' motor yacht Halcyon, where I was the second officer on a crew of 8 sailing from Nova Scotia to the Caribbean. My last job was with Boston Line and Service, a small harbor tug company in Boston servicing the oil and gas industries.
