Moving data around between lawyers, court reporters, and the like.

Your standard "get data, keep data, show data" development role. Insurance-type products, automotive mostly. Helped implement many changes from procedural things (e.g. source control policies) to infrastructure things (e.g. major database platform upgrade) to introducing new snack foods to grateful co-workers.

A straight-up start-up. Flex UI for a virtual world. Coding against a parallel-developed game engine. No bull, all work. I was the dumbest guy in the room, which was kind of nice. Clearly it didn't last long, but it wasn't for lack of talent on the team.

A mix of installed kiosk development and client-based web development. Yet another place where, "Hey, do you know THIS language?" is frequently heard. Half the company was in Canada, no...more than half.

At Assurant I served as both a manager and developer at various times. I was involved in architectural decisions, producing code (per standards, of course...some might say "in spite of" them!) and after-the-fact support.

It's an agency, what can you say? Visual design, coding, meeting "aggressive" deadlines, catering to a vast array of customers using a vast array of technologies (read: languages, platforms and devices). Agency life is "be crazy, be excellent, don't sleep, don't fail"We pulled it off.

I spent most of the whole two years re-coding two online, Street & Smith publications onto a new platform with new hardware, then launched them, then supported them. All ColdFusion, all Fusebox. Load balanced servers, high-traffic trade news websites with both internal and external users.

Client-driven web development at its finest. Or, at least, most interesting-est. In the course of building ColdFusion and Flash (mind you, data-driven Flash when data-driven Flash was NOT cool) websites I learned about makeup, hospital management, and many other fascinating topics.

If you've read this far, congratulations, you're tenacious. If you started down here, what's wrong with you? If you've ever seen an office building being built, and there's nothing but a frame of steel columns connected by steel beams, then you have seen what Southern Engineering does. Structural steel fabrication. It wasn't glamorous, but they still needed technology. If it was a computer, printer, or telephone it was my responsibility. Plot twist: I was part of the accounting department.
