About Jason Van Rassel

Understanding and explaining crime and justice has been the focus of my career for more than 20 years. As a newspaper reporter in Calgary, I wrote the authoritative account of a decade-long gang war responsible for more than 25 homicides. I also spent nearly 10 years as a sought-after TV commentator on crime and justice issues. In June 2016, I made a career transition when I was hired by the Government of Alberta as a communications adviser. I now work in stakeholder engagement and change management on a team responsible for designing and building Alberta's Police Review Commission by December 2025.Over the years, I developed a passion for craft beer and writing about Alberta’s growing craft beer industry, first while I worked at the Calgary Herald and then for other publications. I continue to write about craft beer as a freelancer and have an extensive network of industry contacts throughout Western Canada.
