An entrepreneur with over 30 years of experience in the startup world. Experience in technology, finance, insurance, seniors care, real estate, and other industries. I like creating something from nothing. My first company, at the age of 15 was the first comic book store in my hometown. In the mid to late 90s, while being a full-time B.Comm student, my tech company used artificial intelligence to build dynamic advertisements online and it also provided an online platform for students at my University to socialize, only months after the Internet was launched commercially. It was a time when I had to explain to potential customers what the Internet was and how it would help their business. Following my tech company, I built the first luxury seniors home in Newfoundland, demonstrating a market existed that wasn't being served. More recently, I've returned to tech.Every time I've built a company, I was only able to do it with help from others. I have always searched for mentors and advisors to give me advice. I have always hired staff who know much more than me in their given area. When I had co-founders, they had a depth of skill or knowledge I didn't possess. The common thread throughout all of my 10+ businesses has been that I always had help and support. You can't succeed without help from others. I have been fortunate to have been given guidance over the years, and fortunate to be able to pass on some advice to others from time to time. Often I learn from those that I am advising.Even after more than 30 years, I feel like I'm just getting started. With the pace of change, there are so many new opportunities.I've been fortunate enough to travel extensively. I've visited every continent except Antarctica (so far). I have done business in numerous countries. It taught me that while everyone has differences, we are all essentially the same. I've learned that diversity is a strength and that perceived barriers don't exist. The world is smaller than many think and as an entrepreneur, this is very exciting.

Chief Executive OfficerSafa Mar 2018 - Feb 2020Safa used AI to reduce employment-related risks for employers and insurers, while simultaneously improving the lives of employees. Safa's machine learning algorithms and management platform allowed employers to predict who was going to quit or become ill or disabled before it happened. It allowed companies to be proactive, identify weaknesses in their HR management and operational processes, and correct them. The company focused on the hospitality industry, but with the rise of COVID-19, the company ceased operations when the entire global hospitality industry effectively closed in early 2020.

Cambridge Estates was doing well and so I felt comfortable going. I taught Qataris who worked for QTel, the national telecom company. Co-Founder/PresidentTwolofts (Formerly Globalstudent.Com) Jan 1997 - Dec 2003As Globalstudent.com (predecessor being munworld.com), the company provided services for students online such as a book exchange and a social network. We built a predictive advertising engine in the late 1990's that would customize ads for individuals, long before Google made it the norm. While having to explain to potential advertising clients what the Internet was and why they should advertise on it, we also had to explain how we "know" what you want to buy. They were not familiar with artificial intelligence and didn't understand how we could build customized ads "on the fly." At the time, we didn't even know what we were doing was AI, we just tried to build a solution that was better than what we saw was currently available so we would stand out.We decided to pivot after starting as a "dot com" company. The company evolved in to a software development company to take advantage of the advanced technologies it developed. TwoLofts was created to provide collaborative and learning solutions to companies. We created one of the earliest e-learning platforms, today called an LMS (learning management system), to deliver North American educational content to the Asian market.I started the company when on a work term with the government, bored to tears. I wrote the business plan during my first work term and my second (and third) work term was with my company. While a full time student I had seven full time employees and within a year of graduation we had raised additional capital and grew to over 20 people. The company gave me the opportunity present to and meet with individuals across North America and China. My time in these locations allowed my "international education" to continue by being immersed in different environments with people from diverse backgrounds.

EntrepreneurVarious Companies Jan 1990 - Dec 1996Greenwich, Ct, UsI started my first company at the age of 15 when I opened Corner Brook's first comic book store out of my parents basement. As a junior high school student I would buy from a wholesaler in Toronto. To reduce risk, I would have people order their comics from a catalogue (this was before the Internet). This would mean I never had much inventory because every comic I ordered was sold before it arrived. I could better manage my cash flow this way.I owned a Dickie Dee ice cream franchise while in high school which paid for my first year in university. Throughout university I sold lottery tickets for the Million Dollar Draw, a fundraiser for the 1999 Canada Winter Games. The top sales group was minor hockey with over 3,000 kids selling the tickets. The second top salesperson was me. I set up 416 distributors across Newfoundland and northern Alberta to sell the tickets. I set up and managed these distributors while doing my B.Comm degree full time.In between or at the same time I had some of these companies I often attempted other startups.
