  • Continental Airlines (Contract)
    Contract Developer
Continental Airlines (Contract) Apr 2002 - May 2007
Airlines needed profitability numbers quickly after 9/11, but their reports required 30 days to crunch through the billions of records. We got the report generation time down to 4 hours on existing hardware. Billions of records by lunch on 2002 hardware.High-level idea was to offload a substantial amount of the processing from the Oracle machines to an underutilized pre-existing mainframe. Solution used C++, message passing and POSIX threading. When the mainframe was retired, we moved the offloaded work to Windows-based servers no more powerful than an enthusiast would have in their home. The development time for that migration was minimal and performance increased..Following that, I solved several more business problems for the airline, including implementing the TSA-mandated security policies using Oracle, consolidated time-tracking systems for the organization and implemented a substantial vendor management system using C#/ASP.Net
