As assistant professor at the Strategic Communication group of Wageningen University I focus on sustainability communication and persuasion with a specific interest in trust and environment issues in Western and Africa contexts.

As postdoc in Tilburg I am studying regional governance in European cities. We focus on the emergence of governance arrangements in city-regions, how they function and their democratic legitimacy. We do this by studying several cases: Eindhoven, Berlin, Copenhagen-Malmo, Zurich and possibly Gdansk, Lille-Kortrijk and London. Between these cities we aim at developing a community of practice and studying the co-learning process.

I am researcher within the CADWAGO project (www.cadwago.net), a project focussing on Climate Adaptation and Water Governance. Within the project I focus on governance learning.

PhD project "Trust dynamics in interaction for spatial planning": Spatial planning can be characterised as the coordination of policies and practices affecting spatial organisation. This coordination implies a multitude of interactions between different individuals, groups and organisations. Within these interactions trust and distrust are seen by both researchers and practitioners as important concepts. Despite this awareness of the importance of trust, the concept is hardly studied within planning research. Such study would imply a thorough analysis of the different strategies and instruments people use in interaction and the ways in which this interrelates with trust dynamics. In studies towards trust that are deployed in other disciplines three main perspectives can be distinguished. First, trust can be studied as a static concept, for instance measuring the amount of trust at a certain moment in time. Second trust can be analysed as a constant variable in relation to other concepts such as uncertainty and risks. A third and hardly used perspective considers trust as a dynamic concept that develops in interaction. It is exactly this dynamic perspective that is most interesting for further understanding of how trust increases or decreases including the patterns that may emerge in interaction processes for spatial planning. As junior researcher I worked on research projects in the field of visitor monitoring in nature areas in the Netherlands and on various projects related to rural road safety, combined with lecturing in various courses. The research projects on visitor monitoring focussed the balancing of nature and tourism. Amongst others, in the Meijendel Dunes (near The Hague), the Veluwe and the Island Tiengemeten (in the Haringvliet) research projects were executed. Here, we monitored the amount of visitors, their expectations and the way they experienced the area for several seasons, years or decades. These results were used to develop policy strategies and meassures to improve visitor management in relation to the, often, vulnerable nature of the specific area.With the changing functions in the rural areas and consequent changing traffic flows and demands, rural road safety is a major issue. In various projects we focussed on the road safety in relation to the road design, drivers' behaviour and changing agricultural vehicles.
