Department of Molecular GeneticsProject aim is to find a synergistic therapy with gram-positive antibiotics together with biofilm permeabilizer dispersin B, using gram-negative pathogen (Pseudomonas aeruginosa). Biofilms are produced by groups of bacteria, it consists mainly of polysaccharides, nucleic acids and other proteins. The biofilm enables the bacteria to stick to each other and other surfaces and to build a matrix that protects the bacteria to the environment. With pathogenic bacteria, this can lead to big problems. However, there are enzymes that prevent or inhibit biofilms. An example of these enzymes is the protein dispersin B, which can hydrolyze the extracellular polysaccharides and thereby inhibit the formation of the biofilm and allows the adherent cells to be released. Using genetically modified E. coli, this protein can be produced and used for minimum inhibitory concentration analysis to eventually find a good synergistic therapy.During this project different techniques were used; Clone manager, plasmid modification, PCR, Western Blot, Bradford assay, protein purification (HISTRAP, C18, PD10, membrane), MIC tests

Departement of Epidemiology The first objective of the research assignment was to gain first-hand experience with statistical software (SPSS), and to learn which statistical tests can be used for different research questions. Furthermore, to learn how to manage data, what is possible with SPSS, how to write and use a syntax, how data from questionnaires is verified and validated, and to understand the basics of statistical analyses and different research questions and types of data.The second objective of the research assignment, is to validate and categorize 3475 abstracts from different research articles. A selection that fits the criteria will be used for a meta-analysis. This meta-analysis serves to combine the results of all the selected scientific studies, to have a higher statistical power and it will increase the precision of the answer to the research question.

Departement of cell biology.Research in group dedicated to the chronic disease of multiple sclerosis. Performed research focused on the effect the extracellular matrix protein CSPGs on the inflammatory activation status of microglia and macrophages. Furthermore, the effect of the possible alteration of the microglia and macrophages on the differentiation of oligodendrocyte precursor cells. Microglia and bone marrow derived macrophages were CSPGs, not activated or activated to a pro-/anti- inflammatory activation status. mRNA and total protein levels were measured of several phenotype markers and MMPs. To examine the second aim, conditioned medium from microglia and macrophages was used to grow oligodendrocyte precursor cells.During the project different techniques were used; primary cell culture, Western Blot, Q-PCR, ELISA.
