Work history:1967-1970: Millwright apprentice (Iscor). 1971-1972: Study Mechanical Engineering at the University of Pretoria. 1973-1979: Assistant Resident Engineer at Thabazimbi Iron Ore mine. Responsible for the maintenance of all the different areas of the mine during subsequent periods. 1979-1982: Resident Engineer of Sasol's Sigma Colliery. Responsible for all maintenance activities, supply of services, surface operations, all project engineering. 1982-1985: Responsible for all mechanical maintenance of the Sasol I plant. 1985-1987: Headed the project team that designed and chose a maintenance information system for the Sasol Group of companies.1987-1993: Managing Director of M-Tech Consulting Engineers (Pty) Ltd, a consultancy in the maintenance field. 1993-1999: Chair in Maintenance Engineering at the University of Pretoria. Responsible for the administration and co-ordination of all courses in Maintenance Engineering. Operated M-Tech on a part time basis. 2000-present: Managing director of AM-Tech Consulting Engineers (Pty) Ltd (previously M-Tech) involved in maintenance knowledge development and transfer (Terotechnica Maintenance College), and maintenance consulting. The main interest of my personal consulting work is the strategic management of maintenance. Also involved at the University of Pretoria's Centre of Excellence in Maintenance Engineering as an Associate Professor.Tuition:Millwright, BSc (Mech Eng)(with honours), GCC (Factories), GCC (Mines and Works), BCom, MEng (Industrial Eng)(with honours), PhD (area Reliability Centred Maintenance).Memberships:SAIIE, ICMEESA, IAM, IFRIM, SAAMA, FISEAM, AkadSA.Additional information:1. Author of text book, RCM ProAktiv, on an improved version of RCM (based on my PhD research). Used at the University of Pretoria, and Terotechnica Asset Management College.3. Controls a team of 20 specialists, who did a full systems analysis with a Functional Specification Report for a custom made system as end result. Due to a change in company priorities this was followed by a complete package survey and selection.

Manager, Mechanical DepartmentSasol One Oct 1982 - Dec 1984Appointed as Manager, Mechanical Department, Sasol One with statutory responsibility for all mechanical and civil equipment. Responsible for all mechanical and civil service workshops, infra-structure and area maintenance using in the order of 1500 people. Achievements include the establishment of a specialised mechanical services division, the initiation of a study into the adequacy of the factory's maintenance facilities as well as a pilot study in the analysis of plant historical data to achieve an improvement in plant availability, the improvement of the department's team cohesion using organisation development techniques and the improvement of budget/cost control dissipline.

Resident EngineerSigma Colliery, Sasol Oct 1979 - Sep 1982Appointed at Sasol's Sigma Colliery as Resident Engineer. Carries full statutory responsibility for all machinery and is also responsible for the execution of all capital projects, all engineering design work, the operation of all coal transport systems and the surface crushing and screening plant as well as the maintenance of all equipment (underground, surface and infra- structure). Achievements during this period includes the building and installation of a computerised maintenance system, a decrease in maintenance costs of 10% in real terms, high average availability of equipment (80% plus) and the lowering of the engineering department's accident frequency to well below the industry average. The engineering department in this way contributed to the achievement of long wall and continious miner world records as well as an National Productivity Institute award for productivity improvement.

Assistent Resident EngineerIscor Iron Ore Mine, Thabazimbi Oct 1973 - Sep 1979Appointed as Assistant Resident Engineer with full statutory responsibility for a part of the mine. During this period manages various parts of the mine's engineering department, including the design office, various construction projects (including the installation of a large underground crusher plant), capital purchases for the whole mine, service workshops as well as the maintenance of the ore beneficiation plant, underground mining equipment, open cast mining equipment and all infrastructure.
